Rear End Collision
#1

Just rear ended this evening. Really messed things up, hoping the drivetrain is unaffected. Appears the exhaust has been pounded and very rattly. Taking it in tommorrow, was able to drive home. Question is, anyone else been hit in the rear, and is there anything I should be looking for speciffically, like damage to the cat from the impact. Back end is really messed up, lights are ok, and spare tire well seems unaffected.

Thanks for any input.

Phil

The only way to know for sure is to have it up on a lift and preferably a frame machine to check the inner structure.

Have the rear crash bar (inner bumper) and bumper shocks checked.

There is a rear bumper cover in the parts for sale section.

The no cell phone law really needs to be passed across all 50.

sorry to learn of this Phil. clearly the good news is that you're not hurt, but too bad the 968 took some damage . a few months ago my MBZ was rear ended and totaled, i walked away from it, but as i posted before had it been the 968 it would have been a fatality ( because i would have killed the b**tard if he would have totaled my 968 ! )

and...of course, on his f'n cell phone ! so + 1 with everyone here regarding a ban in all states on those nuissances !

There was a guy on the British site, I think. He was rear ended and it did not look that bad, however when they put it on a frame machine it was out of wack. They had to cut out the rear quarter panel and do all kinds of work. Cost BIG$$$$$. So don't assume it is minor till you get her on a jig. That bumper cap hides a lot.

I was hit in my car while I was stopped at a light. Some girl texting or something. It was low speed and I let off the brake when I saw her, so there was no visable damage. I was very pissed though and let her have it verbally. "Ban the phone"

We have a law here in CT and they don't enforce it. Technology will be the answer when we get Bluetooth into all the cars. I have it in the Audi and it is the best.

Well so far, my mechanic has looked into it. Exhaust was pushed forward one inch right to the manifold.

Manifold weld is cracked, cat is bent, and everything else is out of alignment. One motor mount is damaged.

So I think big bucks. Estimates going into insurance. They got her driveable, but a bit noisy.

Bodyshop says the exterior should be a quick fix, even though the shell is cracked. Once into the mechanic

or body shop for repairs I get a car to use, so here's hoping its soon. I expect the cat may have to come from

Germany. I will mention checking the frame, thanks.

Really sucks when you take good care of your car, and now of course my rear window rattles in the frame !!!!!

Don't complain about to much or they will total it. You might be able to get the hatch replaced if the glass is rattling, but that new from Germany may push it into the total range.

Glad you're o-k..

Here in California they have the hands free device requirement, but i still see dozens of drivers with their phone in-hand. Most likely the cell-phone lobbiest are in the back pocket of the gov so logical restrictions won't happen. They [phone co's] could careless about accidents...

Some pics, not good ones.

Looks like 4500 mechanical, plus body work.

$4500 in mechanicals? Are they rebuilding the motor? The entire exhaust system from header back from RSBarn is a fraction of that price.

The insurance company estimates using factory replacement parts where possible.

Some carriers may let you use used parts.

actually the retail full boat price for the exhaust is not that far off - the last time i checked the cat alone was nearly $2000 - if they had to replace the entire system, it is about $3500

but yeah, i'd take the buyout, and get it done myself - you have that right in california - not sure about other states

With the mechanical bill at $4500 and the body bill not in yet, it looks like it will be totaled by the insurance company. Which would be a shame for something that appears to be minor.

if the bumper cover is the only body issue, it may be ok - i had a similar bumper job done when i got rear ended - i think it was about $1300 - they can actually repair that bumper cover - the full job may only end up being about $6k - i don't think they will total it for that

but, you never can tell with insurance companies

One of our SoCal neighbors just went through an insurance total and rebuild. He did a great job and came out ahead. So don't sweat too much if the do total it. Check out Synch's thread.

It's just the resale issue, if you ever plan to sell it.
