Ready for the Showroom
#1

I took a chance ... and things worked out! I bought my '95 968 last November over the internet (AutoTrader seach) 'sight-un-seen' and had it shipped back to Canada. It was a 1 owner car from MA with 59,000 miles. CarFax checked out so I took a chance.

The good and the bad: The good was the great mechanical shape of the car and low mileage. The bad was some rear bumper fascia damage due to the previous owner backing into a curb. The area around the tail pipe was cracked and the tailpipe was bent out of shape. The other side at the knock out hole also had a nasty gash. The easiest way to fix the cracked area was to cut it out and this led to the dual exhaust modification. The oval shape led nicely to fitting of a dual ss tip, so I made a template and cut out the other side and added some automotive trim edging. A local custom exhaust shop made up the ss cat back pipes and replaced the original muffler with 2 FlowMaster cylinder type mufflers and finished it off with the ss dual tips. I would have preferred single oval tips (993 style) but the openings were too broad so I needed the dual tips to fill them. I am sure that this mod will make some of the purists shutter, but I like the balance that it gives this great car ... and the exhaust note is awesome!

The other modifications are listed below. I am in the process of acquiring a 4 spoke 993 steering wheel, and looking forward to some install advice from Anchorman and Biotechee.

If anyone is interested, I have posted a lot more pictures on my company web site at Applied Biomechanics - 968. Thanks again for everyones input to the forum, and to the people who manage it (Flash, Peter, others?). There is no way that I would have taken this on by myself, or even bought the car if it was not for this forum. In fact, it was this forum that got me interested in buying a 968 in the first place ..... so I can tell my wife that it was all "The 968 Forum's fault" !!!

I think the car looks awesome - and I go for the quads.

I'm curious, though, about something else - and that's the nature of the post-processing you did to the photos. They have the crisp, almost-unreal, look of HDR - are they?

Great color!

Although not for me, You did a great job with the exhaust.

Hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

looks great - i want to see shots of the exhaust system - i have contemplated that for a LONG time, but i've spent so much on testing other systems, that one was just too much work on top of it all

Your not the first on this forum to buy sight unseen. Things seemed to have worked out well for you. I do like that color, pics just dont do it justice. The cut into the rear bumper for the tail pipes looks very clean. Good job. i would like to do the same but with dual tips.

I would love to see a shot from the back to view the pipes better. Nice car.

I'd like a see a under the car shot to see how it's all mounted and routed. I like the looks and am intersted in how you fitted it all up under there.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I thought that the response on the dual exhaust would be more mixed, or perhaps even slant towards the negative side. I guess I was in pretty much of a no loose situation to give it a try. With the damage to the existing exhaust tip and the bumper fascia, it was a cheaper and easier prospect to modify around the damage and try the dual exhaust than to replace the bumper fascia. By replacing the factory muffler with the 2 FlowMaster units, the sound quality is greatly improved, and I have not noticed any reduction in power, however it would take a dyno test to tell for sure.

The guy who owns the custom exhaust shop is a friend and he did the work himself, so it was not too costly. I am going to go by his shop on Saturday and see if I can get the car back up on the hoist so I can take some pictures underneath of the car for all of you who are interested.

As I said previously, if I was going to do this mod on a non-damaged rear bumper fascia, I would likely just template the drivers side exhaust outlet contour (or enlarge slightly) and match that on the passenger side, and go with the single tip 993 style outlets. I traced the outline of the dual tips on a file folder, then added a 1/2" margin for clearance. The automotive trim edging cleaned up the look, but I am sure that this could be improved on as well.

Anchorman: The pictures I took were using a Nikon D70 using just Normal JPEG format and resolution. However, they were shot with a 3008 x 2000 pixel size, and then re-sampled/resized to 600 x 399 pixels. Even at the reduced size, the file size was too large for upload. I used Corel PhotoPaint to then convert the file as an 8 bit Paletted image which drastically reduces the file size and makes them much easier for a browser to load. Glad you like them. The other plus was the lighting. It was an overcast, but fairly bright day which makes for a great filter for photographing shinny objects like cars.

i really like it - i held back on doing this because of the "lip" around the oem location - i would have had to bond a new one onto the other side to make it match - that meant another repaint - i never thought about just removing it altogether and trimming it out

this way is very clean and attractive - yes yes - pics please - love to chat more about the ups or downs of the performance too - if it's anywhere near a zero change, i'm in - if the sound is right, i'll give up a couple here or there to have that look

see if you can get a recording too - where are you? i'm sure somebody could help with that

Will be happy to take some pictures this weekend. I will probably post them to my web page site so I am not restricted by size or number to upload.

Regarding the recording, I read some other threads here on how you guys went to some lengths to get good recordings. Some recommendations would be helpful.

I am in Guelph (that is pronounced GWELF) in Ontario, Canada .... about 1 hour (1/2 hour in the 968 !) from Toronto. Any other 968 Forum members 'up' this way?

OK ... I will take some interior and under the hood shots this weekend too. I have a "modified" air box mod based on the 4 hole sub-woofer tube design where I have tried to take advantage of a vortex tube effect. Like to get some feedback on this one too.

While I like the idea, I have to agree that single tips would look better (strictly my opinion). And even though I think it looks cool and I seriously give you and your exhaust guy props, I would not be interested in doing it to my car. Just not my style.

One thing regarding the overall look, if I may make a recommendation, might be to lower the car a little. From my perspective, the rear seems to sit up pretty high. I think it would significantly better if there wasn't soo much "void" between the tips and the road. But, that could be just the angles in the picture....

Please do not take offense to my post, just sharing my opinion for what it's worth (not much! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

No matter- kudos! Very elegant and well executed! And, you may very well be the first person to ever make Flash unable to focus on more than one thing! I would wager he is on a plane right now, heading towards Guelph! If you hear a knocking on your front door in a few hours....

I absolutely, positively, love the look. It has now moved to the very top of "next project" list for my car.

And this is from someone who thinks the BB I currently have is the holy grail of exhausts.

Standing by for details.
