Braille B14115 vs. Odyssey PC680 battery
#21

pmason (are you a lawyer by chance - just wondering because of your handle?)-

Your car sounds almost exactly like what mine will have by the time I'm done, plus a rear-mounted Braille battery (to bring it back to topic). That is a crap-load of weight you have to haul around in that class, though. I understand why the PCA does that - to level the playing field, and to control cost, as "adding lightness" gets expensive, but wow, that is a heavy race car.

It's insane how much I'm going to end up spending on this car - I paid top dollar when I bought it because it was in town, and it had a lot of very desirable upgrades, but then I started doing DEs, and then enrolled in a local driving academy, at which point I was really hooked. So now I'm sinking Flash-like (well, not quite...) dollars into the same car to turn it into a track beast. I really need to have my head examined - but I'm sure once I have it sorted, it will all be worthwhile. I use the experiences from people like you, Craig Woodman, Benspeeder, Jim Child, Pablo Crespo, Eric K, and others to inspire me and keep me motivated through the challenging build process.

They say it's a slippery slope, but I think most of us are just free falling.

Just throw all the receipts into an envelope/box and try and forget about them.

Yes great group here to draw upon the knowledge, be a lot of help to me and others, the best thing it so learn what others have done so you don't make the same mistake.

Ah, I thought maybe "pmason" was a play on "Perry Mason."

Yes, there is a lot of good info on this, and to a lesser extent, some other forums, but for the most part, I'm finding that I'm somewhat in uncharted territory with the level of work I'm doing to my car. Not too many people completely dismantle their suspensions, or strip their engines down to the bare block. Several people definitely have, but many of them don't frequent the forum a whole lot, so I'm finding I have to figure out a lot of the stuff I'm doing on my own. But in a way that's good, as I'm really getting a feel for how everything works on this car. Other than the sunroof - that contraption is beyond human comprehension [Image: blink.gif][Image: ohmy.gif].

used few years Odyssey 680 with good results.

some requirements if you choose such light weight battery

- check that your alternator + electronics work well, without any gremlins. This battery cannot handle it

- very recommendable to have kill switch if you have car parked

with those options using LW-battery is no problem also in regular driving. In my current car I don't have it in used, b/c don't have the killswitch yet. should install one though... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> my blue 968 weights currently 1230kg with 10-15ltrs of gas + all fluids. could get it under 1220kg with lightweight battery. ,)

Matti,

Good to hear you've had success with the small Odyssey battery in a climate as cold as Finland's. Central Texas should be a piece of cake.

Cloud9...68 - last few summer's haven't been so cold here either, usually somewhere at +25-30'C. almost too hot! .)

haven't tested how the battery would operate in winter temps - however don't think it would make much difference. if it can crank once it is ok.

of course colder climate takes some cranking off from battery.

Matti,

The weight you've gotten your 968 down to is truly impressive. Is it a pure track car, or do you also drive it on the street? Without giving too much away (in case you want to protect some of your secrets), I have a few questions about how you got the weight so low. Does your car have:

1. A lightweight (e.g. fiberglass) hood? If so, are you happy with the quality?

2. Lexan rear hatch?

3. Fixed headlights?

4. Gutted interior?

5. Lightweight flywheel?

6. Any other "radical" mods you don't mind sharing?

Thanks, and again, I understand if you don't feel like answering these questions.

sure, I can share info

car is "CS", ie it has no sound deadening materials under carpet + without sunroof and without aircon.

i have lexan rear screen, and LWFW. recaro SGP seats without sliders. that's about it.

rims are 18'' Speedlines but they're not super light. oh, Janspeed catback without cat removes surely 10kg, stock exhaust is super heavy.

Installing odyssey 680 + GF hood could bring the weight close to 1210kg... but don't know if it is worth the effort - car is quite nible already.

I used to have GF hood in red one (which is goner now), and it was surely lighter than stock hood. fitting was ok, but not perfect.

I was able to get the red one to 1290kg (it had sunroof + aircon), so this one is 60kg lighter.
