Battery location on race car
#1

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of moving the battery from inside the rear wing at the back to the passenger seat location in the compartment for ease of access and weight distribution (to act as a counterweight to big Graham!)

Anybody else moved there battery to anohter location?

Is it safe?

What about weight distribution?

I am new to this so any advice will be appreciated.

There do not seem to be any rules in the MSA blue book about not being able to do this?

if you are running a right hand road race circuit, i would put it in the rear most right corner

if you are running a left hand road race circuit, i would put it in the rear most left hand corner

if you are runing autocross, i would try to get it as far to the center of the car as possible, but my second choice would be opposite the driver in the rear most corner

What time is it over there?

It's only 11.18 here!?!

It is in the rear most corner opposite the driver already

Circuits will change I think

Is it not better further forward though opposite me?

lol - yeah - can't sleep

the idea is to get the centrifugal force to work for you, or more to the point the centripital force to help - your weight is going to push the car in one direction, gravity is going to push it in another, the battery only weighs 40lbs - it will make the most difference in the corner - it will also help in weight transfer under braking

i've been considering moving my battery to the rear for exactly this reason - ours are in the front over here

Does your car have the tray in the rear wheel arch or is that a CS trait as well?

no - if you have a shot of that, or the part number, that would be great - i'd hate to reinvent the wheel

Graham,

Just get a lightweight battery and then it won't make a huge difference where it is. I'm running a Odyssey PC680 in the stock location. It is 20lbs lighter.

You can usually find them new on ebay for a good price.

Thats not a bad idea Eric.

That is probably the way to go.

Flash,

I can understand why they put it where they did in the CS then.

I'll take a picture for you Flash

I may remove the battery tray anyway as I need to access the wheel arch to clean it up for painting.

To be honest, The CS seems to have quite a few add on differances.

Eric,

That's a great looking battery!

Does it hold a charge and work well?

How long do they last...2-3 years?

The battery has worked great so far. I put it in last winter. The car has started strongly everytime. I always turn off my kill switch between sessions so it has zero drain.

If I don't have a kill switch and just use turn off the car from the ignition switch is it the same...or, are there things still pulling on the battery?

I can't imagine you would have much draw since you have removed a lot of things. I do the kill switch because I want to be sure. I have forgotten the switch sometimes and it still starts fine. I would be most concerned about the layoff times between events. Disconnecting or a battery tender would be a good idea.

Thanks,

Sounds like an easy, and inexpensive, way to lose 20 lbs.

a kill switch is mandatory in scca - i'm surprised it isn't in pca - gotta check that one

if the ground is good, and you've removed the clock, radio, alarm, and interior lighting, then i can't think of anything else that would draw on the battery while off, but i agree that either a kill switch or a tender is the sure way

Eric,

Is your battery in the engine compartment then or in the cabin?

The battery is in the engine compartment for us ClubSport deprived folks. I was too lazy to even attempt changing the wiring to move it somewhere else.

A kill switch is required for PCA racing but not driver education events - which Jason has been doing.
