Pump fixed...now an electrical problem? Help needed again...
#21

Good luck with the Autocross. I've had a lot of fun days in the past with my old car. Looking forward to getting the 968 on the track if I can ever get the time to get it finished.

The reason that the cross-section may be misleading is that wire sizing and thus conversions actually look at the total crossectional area of all the copper strands added up. So, you can't accurately use the OD of the wire to compare. Very thin stranded wire will likely have a smaller OD for the same AWG number as a larger stranded wire. Anyway, the table below provides a good ref. (I compared a couple of reliable sources to insure it's accuracy.) Since the table isn't as readable as a post, I've also attached a file with the same info.

AWG Number Ø [Inch] Ø [mm] Ø [mm²]

1 0.289 7.35 42.4

2 0.258 6.54 33.6

3 0.229 5.83 26.7

4 0.204 5.19 21.1

5 0.182 4.62 16.8

6 0.162 4.11 13.3

7 0.144 3.66 10.5

8 0.128 3.26 8.36

I know this is an old topic and I am necro posting but I think it deserves a bump.

This wire just about bit me. I was going to replace the VR and I started moving this wire and the insulation just fell off. I ordered some wire on Amazon and will build a new harness this week.

This thread helped me determine what to order. 5' 4 awg, 5' 10 awgand 5' 14 awg with appropiate connectors 5/16 lugs and #10 terminals. I may just splice the wires in the white connector together depending on how the rewiring goes.

This chart is helpful as well http://www.wiringdepot.com/jt-t-tech-art...-Size-mean

Scary stuff. Thanks for the post; Im going to check mine.

This is an unfused wire, correct? Google 928 battery wire fire for a recent extensive post about the dangers of unfused battery wires with worn insulation. Took out a whole shop. Not for the faint of heart!

Yeah it's unfused. The insulation on the big wire and one of the smaller wires was jus falling off in chunks. It is for sure a disaster waiting to happen. I am glad I ran across it before I had a problem.

The VR for was a good change as well, I wonder if this is the original alternator.

Read this thread...all harnesses should be changed by now.

Sadly, "Ice Shark" passed away in a diving accident a number of years ago and Robbie (Higher Connections) is MIA.

There is a thread on here somewhere about those wires. I listed a part number for the wires I used from Summit Racing Equipment. I also rerouted them to the side to get them out of the hottest part of the engine compartment. Mine were a disaster waiting to happen. Good thing I looked!

Ok I meant to take more pictures but failed, but I will post what I got and also ask a question

First, if there is anyone reading this that has not changed this cable you should do it now. Look at the condition of this

Here is the cable I made when I was putting shrink wrap on it. I also sleeved most of it in fiberglass

So My question is about the white connector, seems I got the wires backwards and I had a no start situation. If someone could snap a pic of theirs I would love to see the wiring. The way mine is now makes no sense as far as wire gauge and my understanding of the system.

I also replaced the vr and that fixed my low charging volts

Did you get the wiring sorted out? There are two smaller gauge wires that come out of the firewall, one is the exciter wire for the alternator, the other is the trigger wire for the starter solenoid.

I got it sorted. Somehow I switched the wires in the white connector even though I double and triple checked before I took it apart.

Sooo, I got a 10 gauge exciter wire and a 14 gauge solenoid wire :glare:. I got it backwards when I built it I think. It should be ok.
