curious about gas gauge... - 94'968 - 05-04-2009

my odometer gear stripped and i wasnt looking forward to hunting down a gear as well as replacing it. so while i was at hershey this year i came across a perfect condition 968 gauge assembly. guy said it was mine for $50. that along with a new thermometer $70.... i thought i couldnt really pass it up considering half the bulbs on my gauges were burnt out, person before me put those silver rings on it and did a horrible job resulting in one falling off and me taking the rest of the others off (leaving a super glue residue gahh), as well as the front face being cracked about 2 inches up from the bottom. i new clean gauges would be nice... so all in stalled all is working perfectly!

driving back to school i cant help but notice something about the gas gauge just isnt the same.... the gauge i used to have had the " 4/4...3/4...2/4...1/4 " next to the gas tick marks, my newly installed one does not. this gauge cluster has to be from a 968 given is has the electronic odometer. so i was just wondering if only the late 968's had the factions? and if anyone knows why porsche decided to make this change right before ending the production....

Joe, my 93 and 94 gauges show:

4/4 and 2/4 only.

I believe the gauge clusters have been the same since they came out for the 944. You probably have an early one. The 944's also used electronics for the odometer and speedo, they just got the signal from a different spot.
The odomoter gears are cheap and easy to find. Here is one place, http://www.odometergears.com/porsche.html you will need to count the teeth on the gear to be sure, they used either a 12 or 16 tooth gear in the 968, just depends on year I guess.

My 95 says 4/4, 2/4 and R, for "Reserve," I'm assuming
