I know this is a long shot, but the alignment of the oil filter stand casing to the block is critical, because if these are misaligned, the oil pressure relief valve could bind, with very negative consequences. The manual calls for the use of a special threaded alignment pin, No. P-9262/1, to do the alignment. If anybody has one, I'd be glad to rent it. If not, I'll go ahead and buy one, and have it available in case anyone needs to borrow it in the future. Thanks.

Since that tool is listed as "No Longer Available" people have been using the late model OPRV as the tool. In several other forums they are saying as you are replacing the cover plate you just keep moving the OPRV to make sure it does not bind anywhere as you replace the bolts. Once all the bolts are installed finger tight, check for no binding of the OPRV. If it binds moving it in and out, back off some on the bolts and slightly move the cover plate until the OPRV moves freely and finger tighten all the bolts. Once the bolts are all finger tight check the movement of the OPRV again. You can now torque the bolts to 15 ft lbs.

It would be great if someone has the new tool for them to take all measurements and post so we can have one made for ourselves. You can buy the old tool used up to the 86 944.

Well, I just ordered the tool from Paragon a few hours ago. The opinion on the need for the tool was split pretty much 50/50 among the people I asked. Pete from RS Barn was probably the most adamant proponent of using the tool, followed closely by Jason from Paragon (although I guess he isn't a neutral party). But several people said they got the casing aligned just fine without it. My concern is that the OPRV flexes where the slide valve housing meets the plug, so it doesn't seem like the ideal object to use for the alignment, so to be safe, I went ahead and ordered it. So, if anybody needs to replace their oil filter stand casing gasket (and I bet at least 80% of them are leaking), let me know, and I'd be glad to "rent" it to you for a very reasonable fee.

Hi, Sounds great, at least one vendor has the tool. Much better to use the tool than not. Peace of mind if nothing else.

Yeah, that was my thought as well. Kind of expensive for a threaded pin, but this alignment is so critical (come to think of it, I can't think of much in the engine assembly process that isn't), that I figure I'm buying some piece of mind. If you need to use mine, let me know. I should be done with it in a few days (assuming I can put the dern oil pressure relief valve together without shearing off the inner o-ring...)
