Wanted: Used Fuel Rail -
NeedPorscheSpeed - 05-08-2005
Well, just as I was completing my camshaft/pads/chain job today, I noticed that I have a very small, barely noticeable crack in my fuel rail at the point at which it connects to the return line. I thought I would put my feelers out for a used rail before I shelled out $250.00 for a new one. As hard as I tried to prevent the rail from flexing when I loosened the nut to the return line when I removed it a while back, it still cracked. Today, as I was nearing completion of my project, I noticed it... So, always be extremely careful when removing the return fuel line from the fuel rail, or you may suffer my fate.

Any chance of taking it to a local welder to have it brazed or TIG'd?

Greimann,
I had run the idea of welding by a couple of friends and they thought it was too risky. However, with the problem being on the return line port, where the pressure is quite a bit lower, I had thought it might be a viable option, as well. Please give me your thoughts on this. Is it a common practice? Do you know of others who have done this to a 968 fuel rail, specifically, with success?
By the way, it was quite a heartbreaking moment... I was so close to being able to turn the key and fire her up. After three months, I am really beginning to miss her!
Thanks,

You will need to take it to a fuel or hydraulic line specialist. Look in the yellow pages. Don't just take it to a wrought iron fence guy. As long as it is done professionally, there should be no issue. They may say it can't be repaired, but at least let them look at it. It can't cost more that $30 to have it fixed.
There is no low pressure in the fuel rail. The fuel enters the open end, passes by the injectors and out through the fuel pressure regulator. Only after the fuel pressure regulator is the pressure low in the flexible hose.

Oh, don't worry: when an engine fire is on the line, I would only accept a specialist. The wrought iron fence guy will not see my fuel rail. Thanks for your advice; I will try to locate a specialist in my area tomorrow.
In the mean time, here is some interesting pricing information (all MSRP): the 944/944S2/951 fuel rail is $750.00 and the 944S fuel rail is $450.00. With the relative scarcity of our cars, one would expect the fuel rail for the 968 to cost around $1000.00, at least. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the MSRP is only $250.00! What a relief! I hope that this price isn't a misprint. I will confirm it tomorrow via telephone.

Now you have me paranoid. I just closed up my cam cover and screwed the two gas lines back on....and noticed that one was rubbing against the cam cover too hard. I must have bent the tube taking it off. So I straighted it...but...now...on reading what you posted...there's a chance that I could have cracked the fuel rail. Thanks for the warning. I'll watch closely when I crank it up next time....I have a halon extinguisher and will have it ready.

Oh no! I hope you have better luck than I did! If it is cracked, let me know, and I'll share with you some leads for some reasonably priced used rails. I just received my replacement rail today, and it goes on tomorrow. It goes without saying that I will be overly cautious when I install it!
