Modding the metal bracket to allow the DD unit to pass through while keeping it in place was the right approach. I removed mine and find that the center console has a tendency to shift a bit. There's definitely wiggle room without that metal keeping ti nice and tight.

yeah- i figure i didn't want any noises, that the dash is definitely supported by it, and with as much trouble as they went to with the heavy sheet metal, doubled up in some places, and all the bolts holding it in place, that it was an integral structural component - the sheet metal is thicker than what they used on the frame rails - as i have a cab, i really didn't want to mess that up - so, i only opened it up where i needed to, and didn't mess with the structural integrity of the bracket
just waiting on a phone call now so i can go down and finish

ok - stereo all installed - preliminary tuning done - need to drive it for more - also need to activate the XM and program my phone book and stuff, but it's all there now - finally
you can see the other threads about the gauges and stuff, but here's a shot of the deck installed

thanks
it does sound good - i liked the JVC, but i know this deck, and can work around some of the more limited features - it has a few things that make it easier for me, but mostly it's just the same as the other cars
of course it's raining now, and i can't drive the car - lol
i should get a chance today to activate the XM and finish the programming though - whew!
now i need to find a home for the JVC and all it's goodies

arrrrgh! i went to activate the XM today and found out the shop sold me the wrong module and this one does not do traffic - so, i get to yank it out and swap it for the one that does

Do the Double DIN units fit without much modification (other than as I see, to the face panel) or did you have to do some significant reshaping to the metal bracket(s)?

go back and read the rest of the thread - it will show you what i did, complete with pictures

My apologies for not being clearer. I did read the entire thread initially, and I just did again as you suggested, but I wasn't clear what specifically you had to trim to get the unit to fit, eg. I'm assuming you had to cut those two holes in the metal bracket to allow the lower corners of the unit to fit, (or are they already there?) No disrespect, by the pictures they look a bit rougher than "factory" so I'm assuming you cut them out with a Dremel or similar tool, but you know what happens when I assume... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
Side note: In looking through Crutchfield, I'm amazed how much the double-DIN units have come down in price! Especially for non-NAV units. Wow!

no worries
as i said in the thread, i made those openings, and removed all of the cross pieces - i used a die grinder, so no, they are not smooth and factory looking - i cleaned them up as much as was needed for the function - i doubt a dremel would do the job though (definitely not mine) - that thing is pretty hard steel, and fairly thick
what i did will become quite evident as soon as you have your bracket in your hands - it was not that hard, but it was time consuming, and you have to have the tools

Looking good Bob. I could never go back to a single din. The interface on these are so much easier to work with and really updates the look of the intr.
Now all you have to do is rewrite the software in the unit to display Boost & temperature in 3 minute intervals and voila! Your all set

The double din fits perfectly. You do need to removed the center metal piece on the bracket from what I remember. I did this mod a while back and have the pioneer AVIC D2 nav installed. If they have had the single din unit that they have now, I would stick with the single din and install the Kenwood BT945U. I just installed it on my Lotus and I am very happy with it. Fully loaded, blue tooth, usb and much more. The only thing missing is the NAV, but with the new android phones, It can connect to the head unit via bluetooth and use the phones gps, pandora and music functions. If anybody has a linen center console that wants to do this mod, I will be more than happy to swap center console and throw in the pioneer unit for an additional $250.00. WOW what a deal...lol

I notice you're using (weather permitting!) the non airbag steering wheel which is much nicer to grip. was that your own mod Flash? I would check thru earlier stuff to find out but I'm a lazy sod with computers.

I need a new center console but my original has already been chopped. That is a good deal.
