Prices looking up ?
#1

Red coupe on eBay, nothing really unique about it other than an LSD and low mileage , but it already has a $ 21,000 bid on it. . Sure it"s in great shape, but It's a coupe and in very common red so surprising someone has committed to pay at least $ 21k for it. As was often said before, the value is whatever an given person is willing to pay. I was offered $ 25k for mine with over 100k miles on , just because the guy wanted an iris blue 968 ..to add to his cobalt blue 911 and his prussian blue 928 collection. No rhyme or reason for the price one pays for these cars, just a desire that drives the value...but very rarely so, regretfully...

Here is an article from Hagerty Insurance that documents the claim that prices are going up for the front engine water cooled Porsches.

Oh well, looks like I can't get the link to work. Search R-e-n-n-l-i-s-t for "Hagerty" and it will pop up.

An, no, I haven't been on RL in 2-3 or more years, this article was mentioned on a "Bring-a-trailer" comment chain about a 924 Turbo which led me to RL.

i suspect that bid is not a real one. it's either that or the bidder really wants that car, because there is no way in this market that it is justified

does the ebay system allow you to bid on your own item ? i thought they have a way of preventing that. if not, someone wants that low mileage car, and could care less about the market value and/or has no patience to look for a comparable one priced considerably less..

it isn't too hard. all you need is a second email address and second i.d.

it's a clean car, but unremarkable. best of luck to the seller.

True, it isn't hard to bid on your own item on ebay. However, the selling account gets charged the ebay fee based on selling price.

There is nothing to prevent a seller from shilling their own auction with another account or having a friend bid on the item. If the item does not sell to a higher bidder, the seller can just claim the "winner" flaked out and relist.

It does appear that there would be a $125 fee to the seller upon a successful auction sale of a car over $2001.00, but the seller could also cancel bids or end the listing early claiming the car is sold to a local buyer or something and avoid that fee.

Lots of cars on ebay IMO are just there to generate out-of-band deals and seriously going to sell at auction.

What no one mentioned is that the red coupe has only 17K original miles and LSD... If anyone out here can duplicate those features, I suspect they can command $21K for their car as well. Basically a one owner car, garaged forever and mint mint condition... as close to walking into a Porsche dealer today and buying new... and yes, the waterpumpers are starting to move up on the price scale...

BTW, this is not my car, just commenting... I saw a similar red 93 coupe w/o LSD sell for nearly $16K last week, and it had about 60K miles on it, so hang on! If you want to buy a 968, get one now! Apparently the economy is not affecting our babies!!!

that's still high. when i bought the white cab 3 years ago, it was only $19k, and had 14k miles on it.

i hope he gets it, but even when things were better, that was low mileage M030 territory

i'm predicting a re-listing very soon. i just hope that we aren't screwing up the deal by making the buyer think he's over-paying.

the car is very clean, and low mileage examples are getting harder and harder to come by. that adds to value.

That doesn't reflect over here, I've noticed a lot of cars coming back onto websites and usually at a lower price. And let's not kid ourselves on, buy one of these babies and you're making a financial commitment! So prices going up a bit does not cover the outlays long term, in the past year I've shelled out about 9600$!. Crivens the sporran is empty!

Wow, $ 9,600 in a year ?! If you don't count the pinion bearing ( the PO paid for that repair ) and the timing belt break disaster which was entirely my fault, I have spent less than $ 500 in repairs in the last eight years ! One clutch hose, a DME relay, and a rear wheel bearing. Nothing else ever broke down on this car. And mind you, unlike many others here, I rarely replace anything as preventive maintenance ..in fact I never do that to think of it.. I wait for things to break down, but they haven't ( with exceptions above noted )

Yeah, mine's been very reliable too, knock on wood. The AC compressor went out five years ago (replaced with an inexpensive rebuilt one), the aftermarket spark plug wires (which were installed by the PO) were crap, causing a misfire, the sunroof gears stripped, the drivers side lock mechanism broke, I replaced the starter, and the odometer gear broke. That's all I can think of, and other than the AC, I replaced everything else myself. Been one of the cheapest cars I've ever owned. Of course, virtually every seal on the car leaks, which is part of why it is currently in pieces, but that's more by choice than anything else, as I could have lived with the leaks.

Final bid at $21,250 with 3 bids. I had a PCA guy call me that was bidding on the car but he was outbid so it was real. Good news for the 968s!
