Preventive maintenance
#1

After a brief OT discussion on a different thread about the 968 as a Daily Driver and just what exactly that might entail, I thought I'd start a different thread which deals with the preventive maintenance aspects of our cars to see what other members are doing , or not doing , to keep their cars on the road as DDs, or even as just weekend drivers for that matter.  I'll preface the discussion which follows by letting everyone know that without the slightest of doubts Flash and I will be at the the two most extreme end points of the preventive maintenance graph line, with all of you folks filling in the various stages between those ends

I'm pretty particular.  If I think it needs to be done, or is timely, I generally try and do it.  I hate squeaks, rattles, vibrations, etc. so I chase those down pretty regularly.

If your car is in a good state of health why would you do any more than is needed in regular service, if you have already replaced all the 23 year old worn and duff parts.

this is just like exercising or going to the doctor.  you do it to prevent things and to catch things early.  replace belts BEFORE they age out.  change fluids BEFORE they are contaminated.  replace tires BEFORE they get hard.  replace wipers BEFORE winter.  this is all pretty basic logic, and there is a lot more on the list.  still, i know an awful lot of people that wait until they have a problem, and then it's often too late.

yup - the problem is that way too many people think their car is in a "good state".  it's easy to let time slip.  as an example, i just realized that the tires on the white car are 6 years old.  they have great tread, and are showing no signs of age, but i know they are hard and need to be changed.

Belts, fluids (especially oil and brake fluid) and filters. I respect the factory service intervals for these, no more and no less.  Visual checks of everything else are quite regular since there is always something that needs attention.  Right until now all (preventive) maintenance is costing me on average about 1000 € per year.  This number is coming down though, because most expensive stuff has been replaced or overhauled.

Probably coming up in the years to come: transmission rebuild, wheel bearings, steering rack rebuild, head gasket,...

Did I just say the cost is coming down? Sigh... :whine:

Wheel bearing are not that bad to buy but a mission to fit, you get them nice and cheap trailer bearings are the same size 42x80x42 about €30 each

Fronts are a bit more.
