Looking at a 968 in the Atlanta area and need some recommendations for shops to do a PPI. Also, if anyone is familiar with the car/owner, please give me any info you have:

And yes, I know it's high mileage, but from talking to him it's been dealer serviced at the slightest need it's entire life and very well taken care of. I've had two 944 Turbos (one an S that I just got rid of in January) and am now ready to move up to the 968.

get in touch with ventoGT from Rennlist, he's in the Atlanta area and can recommend a good 968 PPI.
I almost bought a black on black 968 he had for sale around Christmas. If you can't find him I can help, I've got a PM from him lying around somewhere.

I bought mine out of Atlanta and used a place called: Franz Blam Racing. A guy named Dieter did the work. It was ok, I guess. However, I got the verbal run-down from them, but never any printed report. While it has all been fine -- the car runs like a champ -- I would have prefered some paper. He found only a couple of minor things (like belt tightening), which the seller fixed.
I was just there yesterday and could have given you a visual inspection!

Try German Car Repair in Roswell. Ask for Alan, he's the owner. Jerry Weiden is the Porsche mechanic. A little pricey, but first rate work.

I bought my 968 in Atlanta and used Rylands in Merrietta to do the PPI and he did a GREAT job. Extremely thorough...and I used his written report to get a couple of thousand $$ knocked off the asking price. He was spot on and I've now got the car in near-perfect shape with no after-purchase surprises.

if you are serious about this particular car, you should pay extra for the PPI, have them remove the top of the engine, and check the variocam. Variocam failure at speed can have disastrous results to the tune of many thousands of dollars.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I was actually thinking about making the seller go ahead and get the vairocam serviced if it hasn't been done recently as a prereq of the sale. Of course, I haven't actually seen the service history yet, so it may have already been done recently. I'm supposed to hear back from the owner tomorrow or Monday, so we'll see.

Variocam servicing is not particularly cheap. I'd be surprised if the seller would do that. However, checking the chain and pads is important. If they look questionable, deduct that amt from your paying price.
