Power Steering Rack
#1

I just finished basically replacing the power steering system in the car in an attempt to fix the the leaks. So far so good in the PS leak department. The best find in this job was the power steering rack. The car had a newly rebuilt rack put in the car when I bought the car, and about a year and 5k miles later the seals were blown on both sides of the rack. I picked up a rebuilt rack from Autozone, the quality of the rebuild seems good, the plug for the alignment hole won me over. On my current rebuilt rack it was a plastic plug that was leaking fluid, the first attempt to turn the plug resulted in breaking the head off the plug. The new rack has a nice metal plug with a O-Ring on it, I thought that was really nice and the first time I saw that. The rack is also a original ZF rack (Porsche part plate still on it) rebuilt here in the states in Arizona. But the two best parts about this rack are that it was only 180 dollars and it has a LIFETIME WARRANTY. That's about $100 dollars more then a rebuild kit and over $400 less then some of the online retailers that don't have a warranty.

I also rebuilt the pump, replaced the reservoir, both lines off the reservoir and all the crush washers in the system. The return line to the reservoir was a little more a challenge to replace, I didn't want to spend all the money on a new cooler just because of the old rubber hose attached to it. I brought it to a hydraulic shop were they cut off the old rubber hose and braised on a threaded end so I can easily replace the hose in the future just by unscrewing the old one and screwing on an old new one.

So in short, if you need a rack, go to Autozone and pickup there rack.

Thanks for sharing Bandit, that sounds like a good solution for a reasonable price. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Ah, if only I'd known a year or so ago - when I replaced a leaking rack, and then replaced that rack, and then replaced that rack...and finally ended up OK. Your experience was much better.

I know what you mean about parts from chain discount stores. I just bought a rebuilt alternator from Advance auto for $119+$105 core for my 968 with lifetime warranty. And I also bought rebuilt calipers for my 72 911 a few years ago for $50 plus $10 core. Sometimes you just can't beat em!!!!!
