Replacement Battery Terminal Bolts
#1

On my 1992 968, both of my battery terminal bolts (that go through the horseshoe shaped battery clamp) are bent into a near 'U' from over-tightening. I'd like to find OE quality replacements.

Can anyone think of a source for replacement of the positive and negative clamp bolts for these Porsche OE clamps. I could go to the auto parts store and buy a couple of cheap clamps or ground wires and swap the bolts with the square heads, but these aftermarket bolts generally are chromed and look cheap. The Porsche bolts are higher quality or alloy.

Any recollection of a source would be appreciated.

actually, the OEM bolts and clamps are very cheap, corrode easily and are responsible for voltage loss - i found that i gained .5V at the terminal the minute i changed to a better one - keep in mind that i did not use the ones you get for 3 bucks at pep boys - they are no better or worse than OEM - i used Phoenix Gold clamps - not cheap, but very effective

I can see how that could be an improvement. For now, I did not want to disturb the OE molded terminals. I have yet to have problems, though I'll have to try to re-establish their original shape, with the ears being pulled in a bit via over-tightening of the bolts by the prior owner. In the past I've had success with this. I looked quite a bit online for square head battery terminal bolts in 8mm. They seem near unobtainium, though they appear to be standard on many german vehicle battery terminals. I've found some 5/16 SAE in steel, galvanized and I think stainless. I've rather go with the OE 8mm for now. I made on offer on ebay for two, to a fellow that has some VW Jetta bolts that appear to be correct. Hopefully I'll get them and they shall work out. At some point, if the terminals and wires and insulation degrade, that would be a good time to switch over to new replacement gold plated terminals.

How well to they integrate with the terminal wires? Do they offer a very clean and secure and aesthetically pleasing solution?

since i replaced my cables with better cables, i don't know how well they integrate with the OEM ones - as for aesthetics, i'll snap a shot tomorrow and post it

I ordered a set of modest priced gold plated battery terminals that were listed on Amazon, in order to at least initially cannabalize the gold plated bolts and nuts that come with set. We'll see what quality they are upon arrival.
