Post screen size
#1

At least on my screen (a laptop), each post takes up a lot of screen space - much more than is usually needed, as it's all of the stuff on the left side about the poster that expands the post box. Is there a way to just see the name of the poster and the text - with the rest of the info being optionally available?

You are very lucky... This software gives members a ton of options.

- Go into your controls Top Nav bar.

- On the right side of the screen is "Options", click Board Settings

You will find everything you need there.

OK - that's great. However, I obviously need to make more modifications than I did, because I didn't get anything to change yet. I'll have to tell the system not to show me more stuff.

Jim, you might also try adjusting your browser text to smaller to fit more info on the screen. Click thumbnail.

Changing the browser text size made a difference in how 968.net shows on the screen, but it didn't have any effect on the 968forums.com screen appearance. I guess I'm stuck. I also didn't find that the Board Settings were able to eliminate what I'll call the "biographical" material that appears on the left side of each post. I guess I'm stuck doing lots of scrolling.

It sounds like then maybe the screen resolution on your laptop is set at 800x640. Try setting it to 1024 x 768.

Oddly I browse this forum (in my bedroom) on an ancient iBook w/800x640 resolution and have no problems with the page's layout or visibility.

Just to clarify - there's not a "problem". It's just that the reply, or message post, boxes are large enough that only two can be seen on the screen at the same time. In that regard, I have to admit that - for me, at least - the screen appearance of posts on 968.net was more convenient.

Gotcha. (That's not screen-size dependent, in that I'm seeing 2 posts on average on a 1280/1024 monitor.)

What I notice in regard to what you're saying is that the page doesn't dynamically resize according to screen resolution. Take a look at this screeen dump:

Notice how the left and right of the page are blank? That's a lot of real-estate.

One thing I really appreciate about this forum is that images are thumbnailed. On 968.net if someone posts, say, one 1600px wide image, it blows the page out to the right, so you have to scroll the whole page back and forth horizontally to read it.

I could never figure out why there were times that the 968.net image would suddenly go so far to the right - I guess it's for the reason you describe.

On this site, yes - there seems to be a lot of "real estate" unused on the left and right, and also under posts that don't "fill the box" - like the one of mine that you use in your example. Maybe this is typical, and it's certainly something I'll learn to live with. It's just different from what I've become accustomed to. (FYI - until now, 968.net has been the only discussion site I visit.)

Hi

On that point it would be nice if the screen would stretch as i find every thing a bit small and cramped (just an observation).

Also the text would be easier to read if it was on a white background rather than grey.

968.net may be a bit dated functionality wise but its very easy to read and the text is slightly larger as default.

Hope these comments help

My laptop supports 1280/1024. Not many laptops support more than 768 vertical.

Yes, lots of wasted real estate on the left and right - so I resize my window for some multitasking. Use of vertical is fine with the higher resolution.

So when it comes time to update a laptop, if $ permit, go for the laptop with more vertical.

ok - i'm at 1024x768 on a pair of 17" flat panels - currently the font is huge and there is about 1.5" on each side of the grey borderline - the background isn't white, but it isn't grey either - it's kind of a muted white - generally i get 2 posts in a screen (unless it's somebody long winded like me)

is this anything like what others see?

what are the little pink elephants that keep running across the screen?

I've attached what I see at on a 19" TFT at 1280 x 1024 on this site and 968.net as a direct comparison

I've resized them to 600 pixels wide for those on lower resolutions! On this site i get two posts without much content where as on 968.net i got 4 posts
