I was driving casual this morning (under 4K RPM) and out of no where I hear a loud buz/grinding noise. I quickly dis-engage the clutch and my
heart starts to rev up and I assume my next motion is to pull over and call a tow truck, on top of being late on a very important work day. I shift to 3rd and to my surprise, all is well. I accelerate to about 4K and put it in 4th this time, consciously fully disengaging the clutch giving the shifter a solid full pull and then re-engaging the clutch. I ran about 1 minute and the shifter popped halfway out of the gear causing the grind again. To cut to the chase, I noticed that the shifter wiggles more so in 4th then any other gear and not just when Im on the gas. Actually when Im on it, it seems to pull back and as Im off it pushes fwd. Around 3.5k the push feels very hard I know because I was holding it in gear till I could get to 5th.
Any of you guys experience this before?

Did you ever figure out your 4th gear issue?
I just wondered what you found[/quote]
I can’t quote what the good folks at IMA told me verbatim, but the root cause of the problem was a mangled snap ring. This rings purpose is to stop the gears from walking forward under load. The absence of that ring caused my 4th gear to be scored as it was grinding against something in the housing. More parts were replaced then I can recall but the only high dollar item was the gear. All is well now and each gear engages better then before.
BTW- Labor $ was the equivalent of being raped!
