Passionate about owning a classic Porsche
#1

Hello All,

I've always wanted to own a Porche and as my kids get older I'm thinking about it all the time. The 928 has been my favorite forever and I still love them but I'm starting to fear they may need too much maintenance to actually own one. The 968 has a so liar look and come in a convertible so maybe that's a good choice for me.

I hope to learn all I can about the model and any known reliability issues that I should look out for. I do a lot of work on my cars at home but have never dropped an engine or anything like that. Any advice would be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Tim ( New Jersey USA)

Tim,

You are sounding like you have done your homework well. By most reports, yes, the 928 can be an expensive maintenance proposition, but then, so too can any Porsche that has not been looked after.

The 968 has its own issues, but this is more routine maintenance related (timing belt replacement). Other than that, and the fact that we are now talking about a 20 year old car, they are pretty reliable.

Welcome to the forum. There is lots of info here and knowledgable people. If it could be a problem, odds are that there is a thread here about it. Most issues are simply that the 968 is relatively rare, compared to most Porsches. Finding people who really understand the car can be difficult - but people here can help.

All the best in your search. We are biased, but believe that the 968 is a great car.

Welcome. Do your research on any 968 you look at. Don't be afraid to ask if anyone here knows about the one you are looking at and ask questions. The help I asked for and received here helped me immensely in my last 968 purchase! Good Luck!

lol - i'm going to take a moment to be amused, and hope others find it as ironically amusing as i did.

i just noticed that in the first line of the original post, "Porsche" is misspelled as "Porche" (though he got it right in the title).

as somebody "passionate" about owning something, one should at least spell it right.

by the way, just as a further point of clarification, "porsche" is two syllables, not one. por-sha

Tim,

If you're not in too much of a hurry, I am just down the road in New Egypt. I can show you a few things to look at in your search. Provost Motorsports and Bodymotion are great shops in the area for PPIs if you find a local car which will be challenging...

I flew to Minnesota and drove mine home.

I'm currently deployed, and won't be around until October. Happy to help when I return.

Unless you're Jay Leno. He has always pronounced it "porsh" and doesn't apologize for it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

3.5 years ago I began searching for my first Porsche. It was going to be a 928, since that was the model I became enamored with in my late teens! After searching for several months, test driving about a dozen samples, doing research on the maintenance costs, I decided to check out a 968 cab. Bought the second one I saw and have NO regrets. As others have mentioned, make sure you look hard for a sample that has been well cared for. Low mileage can be good and bad. A high mileage 968 will have wear issues, but a low mileage 968 may have sat around for LONG periods of time, which can be much worse than a unit that had been driven regularly. Mine had 80K when I bought it, but the maintenance since then has all been routine stuff for this model. I dare say it is in better shape now with 102K than when I bought it with 80K. Keep us posted on your search...

Porsh vs Por-sha vs whatever other pronounciation : a guy hires a day laborer to paint his house, tells him to make sure he also does the front porch . When all done, and ready to collect his money, the painter tells the owner : - Ok, I'm all finished painting your house and your porch, but I think you should know ..that's not a porch, it's a Lexus !

Local radio advertising says "Porsh.." Maybe they are dumbing it down for yokels who can afford but not pronounce correctly...

I realize as owners we're all pretty a-retentive about the authentic ( German ) pronunciation of Porsche, but we do not really observe most of any other foreign words' ( brands, names, etc ) native pronunciations so why should Porsche be treated any differently ?

I'm just sayin' ... :-(

Welcome the poor schmuck who must think we are *'s up our own A**es. He's posting a welcome intro, lets keep this in the vein intended.

Let the newbies learn we start the hazing AFTER they make it past the intro.

Just sayin....

Dave Dave Dave. I was trying to help the gentleman understand we aren't an erudite bunch of educational snobs more worried about pronunciation than fun with our 968's!

Flash started all of this, anal retentive , OCD-afflicted troublemaker that he is, LOL !! So everyone needs to flame flash ( hmm, isn't flash & flame somewhat redundant :-) ? ) just to drive him nuts. Here, I'll start : I'm going to polish the93 Cup (93 Cup (93 Cup (Cup 2))) wheels on my SPORTS COUPE 968 today. There ! :-)
