parts no longer available
#1

Just for information purposes -the 2 wiring harnesses in the engine compartment are no longer available new ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. There are all gone. I wanted to buy both of them and replace mine. There were really expensive but I felt that the time had come. So now I need to find someone who can fabricate them. These wires are getting brittle and most of us will face this problem soon.

Flash - why are you drinking beer right now instead of working on this?

Are they the same as 944/944S harnesses, and if so might used ones be available from salvage yards ? I realize you'd be trading old wires for old wires, but if yours fail, and those work ( who knows, for another 50k miles..) I wonder if it would not make sense to buy them and keep as spare, as opposed to having the harness custom-fabricated which I suspect may cost a ton of money.. Kim, could you be more specific about the harnesses you're referring to? I assume one is what I'll call the main power harness - battery, starter, alternator, etc. If I'm right, that's the harness that was offered by the late IceShark - and I believe I heard that someone has picked that up and is offering a similar product. Maybe someone will respond to this thread with more info - or you might look at Rennlist and do a search there; that's where IceShark was active.

if it's the main power cables, and such, like the Ice Shark set, then yes, Higher Connections has picked it up - they are a sponsor here on this site

I believe he is referring to the actual wiring harnesses not the main power cables.

At some point, I'm sure Kim will tell us what he's referring to, and then we'll know. Irrespective, though, the power cables are known for deterioration, with lots of negative effects.

Yes - i had the other "power cables" fabricated and replaced in the fall rather than buy the Ice Shark ones. They were in rough shape. I am referring here to the 2 wiring harnesses in the engine area - one for the DME/injector/timing section and one for all the other stuff (lights, etc). It is the DME one now causing me grief. And I don't think that the 944 series one will work as that system was not OBD-1. Also, I doubt that any wiring older than mine will be any better shape than mine, especially if I factor in the cost of having it modified and then installed.

I had the connector to the hall sender replaced but it did not help. The engine still is missing. So now I am going to try to (1) disconnect the hall sender entirely and see what happens, (2) check the crank position sensor wire as it could also be broken and (3) try to determine if the variocam is actually being actuated. And to top all of this off, just in case I wanted to spend a bit of money to actually fix whatever is wrong, the front differential in my Cayenne ground itself into oblivion today and so $3500 will go to fixing that. I was also going to have the A/C in my cab converted over to R134a but that may now wait.

So let's add it up and see how the Glimmer Triplets are doing:

2006 Cayenne - out for two weeks at least waiting for new front differential.
1992 - 968 coupe - buggered up since head gasket replacement in fall and has not been able to be driven since
1992 - 968 cab - had arranged to have A/C converted and cab top electrical closure system repaired but this may now wait - but it is the only drivable Porsche that I have (good that it is a "winter" car).

So I am driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra - my Porsche repair car - for the next while.

I am having fun up here guys. And the only 968 around to share the fun with! (Except for Pete at RS Barn who will listen endlessly to my ranting and offer me gems of wisdom)

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but does anyone know if Higher Connections are still doing the main power cables and if they will fit right hand drive?

I suspect maybe they won't because your batteries are probably in the engine bay whereas our are in the boot (trunk).
