parking attendant
#1

This story is from the London Times. My friend in London swears it's true and not an urban legend circulating on the internet. Perhaps some of our members in the U.K. can validate this if indeed true ? If it is, it's simply one of the best , most amusing things I've seen :

From The London Times:

A Well-Planned Retirement

Outside England's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot

for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its

parking fees were managed by a very pleasant

attendant. The fees were $1.40 for cars and

$7.00 for buses.

Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing

a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the Zoo

Management called the City Council and asked it

to send them another parking agent.

The Council did some research and replied that the

parking lot was the Zoo's own responsibility.

The Zoo advised the Council that the attendant was

a City employee.

The City Council responded that the lot attendant

had never been on the City pay role.

Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain

(or some such scenario), is a man who'd apparently had a

ticket machine installed completely on his own; and then

had simply begun to show up every day, commencing

to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about

$560 per day -- for 25 years.

Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over

$7 million dollars!
....

And no one even knows his name.

I think we all wish it were true because of the way the city rapes us with parking fees, meter maids etc. To think some "hard working" pleasant and loyal man was doing that to provide for himself is wrong but when you look at waht was done, ahh, not so bad.

Actually guys it IS TRUE!, I have a neighbour that works at the ZOO, and although the story was blown a little out of proportion by the time it hit the 'national' press in London, it did go on for a while. everybody concerned, has been told to 'keep quiet', as several 'embarrassed' officials within the council, and the zoo were not doing their jobs properly. I personally give the guy 10 out ta 10 for his ingenuity!

Well, since "Snopes" has a good record of being right ( at least, most of the time ) it certainly does prove the story false...though knowing how incredibly inept and convoluted some city/county/etc. bureaucracies and their respective administrators can be, it did lend itself to a great deal of credibility..

As for celebrating criminals.. the world has been celebrating selective "criminals" throughout our entire history, not just in the last 50 years, but only those who committed acts perceived by the public at large to be acceptable or /and downright admirable, in spite of the fact that laws were broken.

Besides, everyone here that has driven a single mph in excess of 65 MPH is a criminal

Certainly very believable considering the way most city goverments operate. One not knowing what the other is doing ? It's for real in some shape or form..........

I have a new job--I wear a red vest, stand by the gas pumps at my local gas station and collect cash payments, offering a 15% discount.

Me too PorscheDude, hence my extreme hoping that Santa brings me a Beltronics GX65 for Christmas this year.

For right or wrong, I too applaud that gentleman for his ingenuity. And heck, his prices were darn fair--$1.40 for a car. Where else could you park for so little. I'll bet the City or Zoo are now charging for parking, and they probably jacked the prices to boot!

With the upped police presence of late. I have found myself making a conscience effort to drive the speed limit. But as soon as I stop thinking about it that needle makes its way right on up to 75 in the Land Cruiser and 80 in the 68.
