fan runs at odd hours & misc. rattles
#1

Hi, I am a new owner of a 1994 coupe and I am just beginning to appreciate the beauty of this car. I did a lot of research before selecting a 968 over other options (RX-8, corvette, ...) and I am glad I went with this option.

The previous owner had updated / fixed some items and I had AutoAtlanta do a post-purchase inspection followed by a bit of work (replace a missing heat shield, etc. I have also begun to learn my way around parts of the car by replacing the illumination for the instrument cluster and fixing a faulty switch.

My current issue is that the cooling fan will come on and run for a few minutes at seemingly random times. It will run as it should when I turn the car off (& the engine is hot), but then it will also come on and run a couple of hours later or even in the middle of the night. So far, it has just been a nuisance as it has not run enough to drain the battery. I am concerned that the sensor or something will degrade to the point where it does run down the battery or worse, it could fail to cool the engine when it should. Has anyone seen this problem and are their easy solutions for a rookie or do I need to get it back to the shop?

While I am asking questions, I would like to hear what others have done to eliminate / reduce squeaks and rattles. I know a 14 year-old car is not going to be as solid as it was when new, but I would like to get rid of some of the sound effects.

thanks

Fan issue -Most likely a bad thermo switch based on past experience. Fix it before it does run you battery down

Could also be the fan relay.

As far as getting rid of rattles and squeks, Start by going around the car and doing a nut, bolt and screw check. Including the interior.

Also check the connections on the fan resistor pucks. They are round white devices on the firewall in the battery compartment area. They can get corroded.

the most common sources of squeaks and rattles are the seats (front and rear) - the bolts on the front are known to back out - the hinges on the rear get loose and develop play

suspension rattles are also common, and usually require new parts

I thought the resistor pucks were for the HVAC fan. My money is on the thermo sensor.

They fixed my cooling fan issues. There are two of them, my understanding one is for high speed and the other low speed.

I just looked it up in the PET and they are tied to the cooling fan, they call them series resistors. Not sure why they put them so far away.

How about that. Seems logical.

I bought one for the 944 I had a few years back.

I never installed it.

I had thought, I needed it for my ventilation fan (only worked on high).

When my fan relay went, it caused my fans to run continuously. I would pop the fuse box and remove that

little bugger when parking while I waited for the thing to come over from Germany.

You nailed it. It was the cooling fan relay.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.
