Sunroof rattles
#1

I have a 94 coupe win which the sunroof rattles whenever I go over the slightest of bumps. It is driving me crazy. It is right around the drivers side sunroof latch. I tried tightening the screws aound the watch but to no avail.

Do I need to pull the sunroof off and take apart? Can the sunroof come apart and is there instructions on how to do that on this forum?

Thanks all!

Does the sunroof mechanism work properly, raising, lowering, etc.? These units can be a bit finicky

You first may have to find out what exactly is rattling. If the sunroof itself is loose when closed, then the lifting arms may not be holding it down tight enough and may need to be reindexed. Those are tricky to adjust and I'd suggest the Clark's Garage site for more info. Even with that info, your first time having this apart will be frustrating at best. Once you see it for yourself, you will begin to understand how everything works together. If the sunroof is tight, ie, you can't recreate the rattle when sitting still just by pushing on it with your hands, you may want to bite the bullet and pony up the dough for a new outer seal. These seals compress over time and although they won't necessarily leak, they can cause fitment problems. I replaced both inner and outer seals on mine once I solved all of my leak problems.

There is nothing inside the sunroof per se. If it is rattleing and not creeking/buzzing then the seal is probably not the cause although I suspect it's the original; they all seem to be even after 20 years. Remove the roof as per the normal Porsche instructions and rotate it in your hands, if there is anything loose inside you will hear it falling on rotation.

Thatks All. It sounds like something is rattling, a loose part, around clamp. With the car sitting in the garage I've hit the sunroof with my fist and hear it rattle. I've taken the sunroof out/off and shaken it but get no rattle and knock it with no rattle. I'll try that again. Then I've knocked the roof liner around the latch and get no rattle either but when I put back in, get the rattle. Maybe the latch isn't tight.

All the mechanisms work and align up correctly, and open and shut together. I've been though that drill already.

I'm sure the seals are all original but when closed is tight around the opeing and I dont have any water leaks. Knock on wood.

I did push up on the sunroof with the sunroof closed and got no rattle. Wonder if the plastic has "warped" alittle?

I'll keep working on it. Thanks

The wind deflector could be rattling in the pocket, I know mine does when going over bumps but only if it's opened all the way.

I sure wish the sunroof was an option on these cars - I certainly would have looked for one without the damn thing - really poorly engineered and more trouble than it's worth imho. I'll generally get it to where it seals tight, then never touch it. Still creaks and groans going up or down driveways, drives me crazy. And don't get me started on my loose rear wing...

Yes, I have come to the conclusion that is the wind reflector rattling around in the sunroof whether it is open or closed. It seems that it never used to do that so don't know what i did to get it to rattle.
