Panamera S Hybrid
#21

What needs to be looked at is the CO2 emissions per km travelled. In a coutnry that has a lot of nuclear power - that might not be too bad. But here is Oz, where most of our power is generated by base load coal burning or gas fired power stations (zero nuclear) the emissions from an electric vehicle are higher (in terms of total CO2 over the life of the vehicle) than a normal vehicle. Whilst it might feel good for a while, it does not make economic or environmental sense.

If everyone switched to electric vehicle tomorrow - there would not be enough grid capacity to cope with the increased demand. All you are doing is switching one form of energy for another.

A modern diesel is much more efficient and emits less CO2.

As for the Panamera - I was following one on my bike this morning, it has presence on the road, if not the world's most attractive car.

For a large car - most are not what you could call pretty. BMW 7 series, Merc S class, Audi A8, Bentley Continental, etc - all look relatively ugly. Purposeful, yes, pretty - no. Even the full size Jag and Masserati are not what you would call good looking. Perhaps, it is because we expect women/models to be lithe - anything with a fair amount of meat on its bones, we tend to think of as porky or not attractive.

Name an attractive full sized sedan - an no, the Aston Martin Rapide is also ugly in my books.

@Craig. Strong points.

As for the weight of the Porsche hybrid, have you checked the specs? The standard Pan S with the V8 is 4340bs according to C&D. The hybrid is 4400 with the V6 and Elcetric motor. So no significant weight gain. Rather a trade off of power for MPG. If you want 500hp 20MPG go for the Turbo, if you love what the car has to offer in style and ride comfort but want better MPG then the H is for you.

As for the style. I've seen quite a few that like and it does have quite a presence, Its a big car.

Ow, my face. Is that a Pamry?

In addition to the limited range (directly) is the lack of infrastructure. I can get in my car and drive to Florida, stopping a few times along the way for 10 minutes to refill the tank. But today in an electric, where would I stop, and how long would it take to recharge the batteries? Maybe in the future there will be lots of battery swapping stations?

15 years old? it looks just like our car

i can't stand all the little doo-dads they keep sticking on cars today, in an attempt to show "style". i wish they would just leave the lines smooth, round and sweeping.

+ 1 it's ugly and does not bear ANY similarity to our car. It looks like an elongated upside down bathtub Blah

I'm deeply disappointed with the 'styling' on the side of the Panamera. I don't know which one of these came first (and, for this Mopar guy, a Charger with four doors is a major crime) but I'm kinda digging the SRT version here...

they did that to bring back the body line of the original charger. caught my eye, but i still think it's a fugly car, and nothing representative of the old charger (which never came in a 4 door). i wish they did to it what they did with the challenger.

based on the layout, the charger should have been called a coronet

The new Charger looks like a bulky and way too tall Chrysler 300 slightly modified to resemble some of the old lines of the real Charger. Not sure why they did not make this car in a lower profile body, it would have been much more attractive, IMO. Incidentally, I liked the Challenger's lines more than the Charger in that same era.. Do they also have a retro-Challenger out there currently, or just the Charger and the Camaro ?

Absolutely agree the current Charger is a foul beast of a car - tho this latest SRT does have a certain Nissan GTR bluntness about it that is trying real hard to scream 'Look at my big Brembos - I'm a performance car dammit!'.

That the Panamera has the exact same body lines on the side as the Charger doesn't help its design legitimacy one bit. The more I look at it the uglier it gets. (But the interior is spectacular!)

This Charger concept from about 20 years ago I thought showed some promise:

yup - but for it being a 4 door, that actually shows a bit of the old look

I actually looked up the specs on the Panamera Hybrids' weight prior to posting. I'd like to see real world equipped weights of both cars. No matter how you slice it, I think it's porky.

I'm not quite sure there was a car in the picture of the Fischer, was there?

I'd be quite happy with an electric car for my daily commute, or at least the occasional commute. I just need one to keep my primary trans in... My Cannondale or Merckx. Beat the carbon emissions on that. Okay, they could be bad if I had beans the night prior.

Has anyone driven a Volt or the new Tesla yet? Someone mentioned it earlier. Having a car with around a 50 mile range that was CHEAP to keep running would certainly work for me. It would leave me more money for the gas bills for Tubbo.

That was me, and still waiting to drive the Tesla this week, but I was not in the office today so I'll see if my colleague has taken delivery of it and is driving it to work already..

BTW, I do like the " concept " Challenger photo above , but even the real one looks better than the Charger to my eye..

The Challenger is actually a good looking car IMO. However, that thing is HUGE! Have you seen it next to the original. It's like looking at a big brother. The Charger, meh. Don't like it, and they shouldn't have put the name on a 4-door.

lol - i noticed the same thing. they did a decent job on maintaining the look of the previous car. but wow it is big. nearly 1000lbs heavier too.

they did the same thing with the mustang.

porsche is now doing it too on the 911

what is up with things getting bigger and heavier? with all these new lightweight materials, and ever decreasing space to park and such, you would think things would get smaller and lighter.

i think the panamera should have wood side panels
