OW,... my butt!
#21

Flash, if you referring to my comment about cotton covers I am not getting seat covers made, ick! Just a cover for the foam pad so you can't see it on the seat bottom. Right now it's made from a very bright pink/orange closed cell foam - lovely

Never mind, read back a few post and tamathumper mentions full on seat cover.

I had the same problem (6f4i). No matter if it is a sports seat or the normal one. After some time you get that pain. It simply is due to our hips being a little wider ;-).

There are 2 approaches that worked just fine for me:

- 996 GT3 Clubsport seat fits like a glove (other say it is too wide )

- Went to a professional car upholstery and had some foam removed from the bottom and

the sides. Gained a few centimeters and the pain is gone too. Not expensive at all

but should be done professionally with lots of care. Take off too much and you are in

trouble !

Take care

I found the best remedy was to raise the front of the seat. With proper support under your thighs, there is noticeably less force exerted on your hips/rear.

My only compliant is the lack of lumbar...

I have the car in for a new top at a local upholstery and top shop near my house that I used previously for my old Miata. I talked to the owner about the narrow bolsters and we came up with a solution. He's installing some extra padding in the middle of the seat which effectively makes the bolsters a little wider. I went down there today at lunchtime and butt-tested it to find the right thickness and density of foam. This is going inside the seat so it won't look any different.

materials = $40

labor = $160

happy butt = priceless!

Do not give up on your 968 sport seats!

I read with great interest the various posts about the seats giving drivers a literal pain in the butt. I have had this exact problem, and had my suspicions about the seat being uncomfortable because we are just too wide.

First issue: I am not that wide; actually pretty lanky, and tall, about 6'-4". For my abnormal height, the 968 is perfect, and for my below average waist, the car is too narrow? It did not add up

Second: I do not think that Recaro would design and fabricate a seat that seems to have this kind of flaw; side support is great, but not at the expense of my accelerator leg.

So if I put a folded towel on the seat, with maybe 1/2" of thickness, it completely fixed the problem, except of course that i now slide around on the seat. The other problem is I am now a little too close to the roof liner.

So I took the seat out and detached the seat back from the seat base for a little better handling on the workbench. Note that the seats have a weird center of gravity, and have a tendency to be a little hard to maneuver unless you take the back off-- especially if you have to work on the seat. Looking at the underside of the seat, it was clear that there was a separation in the foam padding, directly below the seam between the seat cushion and side bolster, going from front to back. Because of this tear, it means that your butt sinks just a little farther into the seat, and then direct side pressure from the seat bolster frame.

My solution: I had a piece of medium density foam left over from an Austin Healey resto. It was a little less than 1/2", so i trimmed it down a little more, and inserted it between the springs and the existing foam seating. I would NOT recommend a DYI try and insert it between the leather and the existing foam- the two are connected together in a few areas, and would require you to completely remove the seat upholstry. After having seen so many bad re-upholstry jobs on British sports cars, i thought that not wise.

After a few butt tests, I had the right thickness, which was about 3/8 inch, and i also added a little padding-the kind used in pillows-- to fill out the two side bolster, and the end result is close to what i think the original seat was designed to do--provide lateral support and be comfortable.

One BIG advantage to removing the seat: you can also attend to those usually hard to reach chores in the footwell like adjusting the clutch pedal, and you can also clean out 16 years of unreachable trash that was collecting under the seat. I took some photos along the way, and will post if anyone is interested in attempting to fix that pain in the butt......

I've tried to get used to the seats in my car, but on long trips of 4hrs + they are unbearable. I'm thinking my only option is to buy an aftermarket seat that fits & supports better (6'4" - 245 lbs) I've researched what's available and Corbeau makes a few seats for "wider" drivers. I am a 36" waist and it appears a VX2000 seat would be just the ticket. I checked thru the Forum and wasn't able to see anything related to this ... my concern is will the seat fit. I could measure and go on their website for dimensions. But has anyone here added an aftermarket seat and need I be concerned about fitment? The requisite brackets and hardware are also a concern. Any feedback & recommendations would be appreciated. TIA Stew

I'm your twin cousin only 10-15 lbs less (on a good day ) I have entertained seats like the 993 as they look a bit wider, especially at the top. Where I live there is no change of trying seat brands for "bum fit" so it will be interesting to see if you find something comfortable. I don;t really like putting a cushion under my butt as it rasies me up enough thta my hair sarts scrubbing the roof and that's really annoying while driving.

I had a problem with a pain radiating down my right leg after 15 minutes of driving. It was caused by pinched nerve in my lower back. Had to have an operation to correct the problem. Hope this is not your problem.

Another advantage to the Recaro Sportlines that Flash has in his car is that they sit lower than the stock seats and provide more room between the bottom of the steering wheel and front edge of the seat. I'm 6'4" and sitting in Flash's car I had much more room for my knees on either side of the wheel than in my car (could also be due to his CS steering wheel, which I will be getting at some point).

Yes, I am certainly challenged when it comes to knee room as well with the Sports seats. A new wheel is in my future too, I just hate to give up my perfect stock one. I like the thickness of it and I'm afraid a Momo Jet might not be as robust.

I'll check into the Recaros ... is there a site sponsor that can furnish these? I don't have any sciatica issues yet ... but anymore long trips in the current seats ...

Currently have Porsche sport seats and i like them.

I'd like to get the Cobra misano's one day as they're much lighter and look better as well. But in the mean time, I have no issues with comfort of the sport seats and I'm a BIG bi guy. Just as long as I remove my wallet first.
