OW,... my butt!
#1

Ah, memories. Driving the new 968 home today for 7 hours quickly "drove home" how the same sport seats in my 944S felt after a short amount of time. Ow.

Something in the seat bolster (not the back bolster but the actual seat under your butt), impinges on a nerve in my right butt cheek and causes a very bad cramp after a few hours - it's literally a pain in the ass. My wife didn't have the same problem, which we attributed to different reasons - but I digress. It's right where my wallet would be if I didn't take it out and put it in the cubby.

Short of changing positions every few minutes - do any of you have the same problem, and/or are there any methods you use to increase long-range comfort? Thick seat covers? Gel-filled underwear? Different seats? Different nervous system?

I find the seat side bolsters to be a little too narrow. It feels like the sides are cutting into my upper thighs/lower butt. It might be my imagination, but on long drives, they seem to spread out a little and provide more comfort (or maybe my ass shrinks?). I tried folding a towel to raise the center part of the seat and that seemed to help. I'm currently on the lookout for a cushion that will do the same thing, raise the middle of the seat so as to have the effect of widening the side bolsters. If I don't find something I like soon, I may go to a foam place and have a piece of dense foam custom cut.

I drive mine 45 minutes each way everyday with no problems, but I'm probably on the smaller side. 5'10, 170 lb's. The seats fit me like a glove(not sport seats glove like). So maybe Porsche was catering to the German side of me. I have no problems other than foot cramps sometimes... but that's a separate issue.

I have no problems with mine, but I have the late seats, not the 944 seats.

@banditsc, is there a picture / comparison of the seat styles? I'd heard of "comfort" seats and "sport" seats, and I'm assuming mine are the higher/deeper "sport" seats?

tama, your car has the regular seats. Sport seats have a much higher side bolster.

definitely sounds like a spring popped or something like that - i haven't had the seats apart though to see how they are built

have you looked under the seat to make sure there isn't something under there that you would be hitting when you sit on it?

The seat's in perfect shape, but maybe my butt isn't. [Image: wink.gif] I'm actually shocked at how immaculate the interior is in this car - no cracks in the dash, every light and switch and hinge works perfectly,...

Apparently it's just a mis-match between the shape of the car's seat and the shape of mine. It becomes a problem after three hours or so, and I think lbpesq probably has it right - I just need to sit on a hemorrhoid donut to get my cheeks higher on the bolsters.

I'm not really a big guy, I'm 6 feet tall, and only 185 pounds, so I don't attribute it to "overfill" if you know what I mean, in fact it might help if I did have some built-in cushion? [Image: huh.gif]

I always need to remove my wallet from my back pocket, otherwise, it's reasonably comfortable.

Same here- take the wallet out and all is good. Purchased my car in Michigan and drove it back to the Philly area in PA. Never sore and quite comfortable.

I think you need to fiddle around with the seat settings a little more. Perhaps what you think is the "right" setting is actually exacerbating some nerve or muscular issues.

I was actually pleasantly surprised, after my first long-ish drive in the 968 from Orange County to Monterey (about 400 miles), that my butt was feeling just fine. I'm 6'4", 220 and have the 993 (non-sport) seats - and always take my wallet out of my pocket too. Maybe play around a little with the angle of the seat bottom? Might move the stress point to a different spot that's more butt friendly. Good luck!

I moved the seat all over the place, and as I said in the first post my 944S did exactly the same thing, so I think my only option might be to have a pad fitted (to the seat).

I'll probably install seat covers anyway, because the seats are in excellent condition and I'd like them to stay that way. Any opinions on whether seat covers do more harm than good?

I found the later seats to be more comfortable than the earlier version - although I like the look of the earlier version better (I had and have the "comfort" version of both). Anyway, if you have a higher mileage car then the seats have had a lot of use and the padding is likely, and reasonably, a bit less resilient than it was when new. Might help to have the cushions replaced (which would mean tearing the seat apart of course).

I've been in the car for 3 days straight and found the seats pretty darned good. Your pain may be due to the seating position - try raising the front of the seat bottom up an inch or so. That can take some pressure off of your lower back.

+ 1 on the wallet removal solution for long trips.. ( sheesh, we must all have some pretty fat wallets ) 3hrs + and I do feel butt cheek discomfort, without the wallet it takes at least 8hrs+ for the same to kick in, otherwise perfectly comfortable seats for me ( I have the late seats also - 993 ) 5 11 and 185 lbs

I definitely have to remove my wallet. I'm 6' 4" @ 220 and the sides of my thighs don't really like the bolsters of my Sport Seats; I guess I'm too wide

I have a 1/2" dense foam pad that I put in the center of the seat for long trips, raises me up just enough that I don't push on the bolsters but my head doesn't hit the roof. I'm having black cotton covers made so they won't be noticeable.

I have the standard seats (not sport) and I am 6'1" 165 lbs, and I'd say the side bolsters on the bottom are a little narrow. I don't normally notice it until I've been in the car for a bit, but I'll shift around. It's like it cuts off the circulation to my legs a bit. I think you're on it about needing more padding on our butts.

seat covers bad - unless you remove them every week to clean out underneath, and condition the leather, you might as well take sand paper to the leather

just learn to clean them and to watch the bolster as you get in
