Options by VIN number?
#1

This probably isn't the place for this question, but the main reason I'm asking is to find out whether I have a limited-slip differential.

I've seen that some people have a reference source where they can look up what options the car has (had) when it came from the factory by knowing the VIN. Is that publicly available?

Or; more directly, how can I tell if I have a limited-slip differential?

I looked at the label pasted in the trunk, but it was not very helpful. Is code 09991 "manufactured from the exclusive-programme" really an exclusive thing?

Appreciate any help.

Greg

Auto Atlanta has a free VIN decoder. You just have to be a customer now.

Option code on label is 220 for <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> I believe. There is a separate number for Torsen and Guards(?) as Porsche used 2 different suppliers didn't they?

220 or 221 depending on the type

No, they just used the one code (220) on <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> 968s no matter which type of <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> they had.

Greg,

As for your car, only two factory options, XD4 painted crest center caps (on the standard 16" wheels) and the LT partial leather in black.

As I explained, you see the 09991 exclusive program code because your car has the XD4 center caps which was an option that was part of that program.

Good luck,

Jeff

Never seen code 221 on 968 options list, only 220, though 221 is also present on Porsche option codes list. Code should be on the sticker in the boot and another sticker in the service book. On my 94 model <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> was $915 option back then. If there is no code on the sticker or no sticker itself and you reckon <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> may have been installed by previous owner try to get rear wheels off the ground and turn one wheel - if another turns in opposite direction no <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym>. With <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym> both wheels should turn In the same direction.

The interesting thing is that 22% of the M030 968 coupes did NOT come with <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym>. Of all the cars you think would have the option!

we don't condone the distribution of this information without the consent of porsche. they own the database, and sell your information to you on a certificate of authenticity for $99 i think.

that being said, your option codes should be on a sticker located under the carpet in the rear area. they should also be on another sticker in the owner's manual

you can then go to the option code list in the library here and look them up.

i know. no worries

we asked him to either show us his source, or show us permission from PCNA (not to be confused with PCA). we do not want to piss PCNA off by giving away something they charge money for. without permission from PCNA or proof that it comes from somewhere legitimate, basically he is trafficking in stolen property and the people he is giving it to are receiving stolen property. PCNA a nasty habit of suing people for stuff like that, and we would be the first ones nailed, as we would be guilty of publishing that information, and distributing it. it could actually be criminal, and since it's over state lines, a federal crime. we'd just like to stay clear of that.

When I purchased my 968, I sent a copy of the title to Porsche, and they called me back with the "info". Unfortunately, they were mistaken in that the nice lady there was just reading the information off of the build tag in my trunk, and matching the codes up with the list she has. She misidentified a couple of the numbers because the option numbers had changed over the years, and she could not really help beyond the list she had. I guess it's critical to have an option code list that is appropriate to both the model and the year.

I don't know where Jeff gets his data, but when he provided information based on my VIN, his info was far superior to what the person I spoke to at Porsche was willing or able to provide.

no database is perfect. i've found plenty of errors in jeff's stuff too, including an entire car he says shouldn't exist (i almost bought it but didn't know it was so rare). you are correct though, that the option codes have changed over the years. it's easy for a clerk at a dealership or PCNA to mess up if they don't know which list to use.

968cs has a good list going, and hopefully we can get that added to the site.

lol - you won't love it if PCNA decides to pursue it, and you received info from him. that is exactly why we can't allow that information to be posted here without either permission from PCNA or proof that it comes from an otherwise legitimate source. it's just too risky. as the publisher of the site, we are not willing to lose our houses over this.

that being said, the list 968cs has going is worldwide, and not just north america, so it would be a great asset to the world's largest and most active 968 website. if it could meet the above conditions, we would to go great lengths to make it a special spot on the site, and available to everyone immediately, rather than having to play hide the ball.
