Opinions, dictators, and what's wrong with grape jelly
#1

Any of us who have been around for a while know that not everybody gets along. It is no different in car forums. It is no different in the 968 world either.

6 years ago, when I first came on the scene, there were a few people who were very active in the 968 community, and had been for a couple of years. They were particularly vocal, and essentially led the community.

Then I came along. Admittedly I was a bit like a bull in a china shop, and they had no idea of my background or abilities, and I didn't spend any time or effort giving anybody any background info first. I was not met with open arms, and rather as soon as it looked like I might be doing things on my own, or that I disagreed with them, I was met with resistance and disdain. This was not the case with most of the people in the community, but there were a few who took issue.

I was not the only one to receive this kind of treatment from some of these people, but I have probably been the biggest lightning rod. They make no room for anyone who might actually have something of their own to contribute. This attitude led to constant bickering and fights. It went from site to site, and continues today.

When Eric Sandoval started 968forums, it was met with extreme resistance from them. Some of them continue to spout their tirades about the evil owners of this site, and how it is a horrible place, yet they never bother to come over and say that here, nor even are they wiling to confront us personally. Instead they have led behind the scenes letter writing campaigns, resulting in unwarranted bannings from sites, and continual baseless slanderous and libelous commentary.

When 968.net died, they tried and failed to start another site. The attitude of exclusion was the reason for that not succeeding. It's a big turn-off for most people, as it should be. You cannot exclude people if you want to attract people. We have a very different policy here. We invite everyone to join us. We have banned nobody. We still welcome everyone, including those who would call us or me the anti-christ or some sort of dictator.

Now, it has come to my attention that there are a few people who are upset that we have an involvement in the Hershey event. Personally I think that is just plain nuts and narrow minded, but I welcome anybody taking that position to contact us, privately or publicly, and let us know why they think that way. We have always been an open forum, and no matter how opinionated or overbearing I am, the site has always allowed and encouraged people to express their own opinion. We do not censor people. We do not exclude people. It does not matter what I think about a topic, issue, or even a person. That does not influence how the forum operates, or what someone is allowed to say. That is exactly why we have 3 owners, and not just one. When I bought the site, I wanted and brought in partners who would help balance out my tendency to run over or offend people. What I say and write tends to be very matter-of-fact, generally unemotional, and frankly often comes off like a cold hearted son of a bitch. This does not serve me well in many situations. It has certainly alienated a few people who cannot seem to separate me from the site. But choosing to cut off the rest of the community because of any one individual is very childish and anti-social behavior. Any free thinking adult should be easily capable of separating their feelings about one member from those of the collective, and move on in the interests of all. It does the community a great disservice to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I extend a lot of time, effort, money, and resource to this site, the community, and the development of products it wants. I would think that everyone could see that, and take with a grain of salt anything I might say or do that doesn't sit well with them, and realize the greater good. I am old and cranky, and piss off my fair share of people, but I also provide things that people want, and only because they have said they want them, so it can't be all bad.

It is my hope that those people can come here and see what a great place this is, in spite of whatever I might say or do. I am not the site. The site is the ultimate resource for 968 fans, and I am but a contributor. Sure, I am very vocal, and am in the middle of a lot of things, but I am not the reason that anybody should make any decision about the site. It is the members that make this site what it is. It is the members who shape it on a daily basis.

The only comment I have for those who would speak ill of us, or me, or have a problem with one or the other, is "get over it". For the betterment of the community, put your personal feelings aside and join us. Divisiveness and separatist attitude does not serve the community. This is the best and only place for the 968 enthusiast, and we would all benefit by the participation of everyone.

We have a "Letters to the Editor" area. Please feel free to post your thoughts there. We are constantly looking for input on how to make this site better. It really is the only place in the world where you can get this amount of 968 information, or meet this many 968 owners and fans. Any other site pales by comparison. It is the membership that makes that. It is only our ability to grow and change and adapt that will maintain that.

I hope to see many of you at Hershey and let me pour you a glass of wine, or see you at another event soon, and that you get a chance to meet me and perhaps see that what you read, and conclude based on that, is not necessarily what you think it is, and that you can pass that along to others who may well have formulated an opinion that prevents them from enjoying the things about this site and the community that most of us have come to enjoy.

I'll jump right in by saying thanks again, Bob, for all you do. Obviously you don't do it alone, duh. All of the other moderators and contributors sacrifice their personal time and effort to keep our awesome site clean and functional. Bravo! And I'd like to add that, hopefully without sounding like I'm trying to blow smoke up your butt, you really do alot for all of us and I for one, genuinely appreciate it for the overall goodness of the marque.

968forums is clearly THE 968 website hands down. We all should continue to ensure its constant improvement by uniting and checking thin skins and bad attitudes at the door. Life's way too short for all that negativity and nonsense.

Dream like you'll live forever and live like you'll die today.

You’re a damn good writer Bob. I appreciate your directness and choice of words. But I think that’s also what some have a problem with.

I witnessed some of the "Flash bashing" early on when I came aboard the forum and I came to understand where they were coming from. When you (Flash) disagree or ask them for clarification without first leading with a "that’s a good point but.." or a "I’m sorry but it may be that.." Some take offense and/or feel embarrassed that you corrected or disagreed with them and it’s out there for all to see. Thus the grudge begins.

It happen to me to. I remember my first post over at .net. I made a comment on how 13 people viewed my post and no one replied and ended it with people around here aren’t too friendly. Man did you guys blast me. To this day I don’t see how those words were so offensive. Some people are just sensitive like that.

For the record you haven’t offended me.. Yet.

I'm stunned (but I guess I shouldn't be) that anyone can be offended that you have an involvement in the Hershey event. I assume that the focus is really on the Hershey 968 event - but that's been organized by Jeff and his "ad hoc" company of helpers, and promoted through the 968 Register, as well as Forums and, as I understand it, RL. It's certainly not a Forums "event", just like it's not my event - but Forums (and others) are certainly welcome to, and apparently will, participate (and even improve the quality of the event) but that doesn't make it their event. It an open event, with anyone having the ability of having whatever level of "involvement" they want, within the overall guidance of Jeff et. al. As the song says, you (and others) can "go where they want to go, do what they want to do..." Self-exclusion is not the same as exclusion.

Problem is, this is the manly way of dealing with a disagreement. You however are dealing with mice. The type to only throw a punch when the opponent is tied and blindfolded.

it is my understanding, as per the announcement, that it is a 3 day sort of "joint event", produced by multiple parties, not particularly affiliated with any one organization, coinciding with the PCA event for the portion that is held at the swap meet

the wine and cheese on friday is open to all and additionally sponsored by RS Barn and Design 1 Racing

saturday is the PCA Swap Meet with the tailgate party sponsored by Kathy Downs, and the dinner sponsored by the entire bunch of producers

the fun run and lunch on sunday are open to all and are additionally sponsored by 968 Forums

did i get that wrong?

I actually dont fully get it either as I haven't read the negative things Flash and others have come across regarding this event. I do however know how they are treated over on RL and decided not to go there. But now I'm curious..

to my knowledge, nobody has publicly written anything negative about our involvement in the event - this is all behind the scenes

The worst part is the folks who bit@h about it bring absolutly nothing to the 968 community. I don't even think these folks tried to get involved with the event. They really don't even participate in the celebration anyway. They show up stay for an hour or two then leave.

Unforunatley the rift is so old and deep, I doubt it will ever be mended. It really is a shame too.

Between Pete, Jeff and Bob, no one does more for preservation, knowledge, imporvements, advice, modification, or dedication in the world. No One!
I don't think better people could orginize this event.
Jeff the knowledge base
RS Barn the preservation and product innovation
Also Max and Pete spend hours a week helping folks diagnose problems without compensation
Bob has been getting parts developed for these cars people said couldn't be done.

Who else better to host the events (outside the PCA) for the 968?

As David mentioned in another thread recently, "An exciting time to be a 968 owner"

All that being said, Bob, Pete, RS Barn and this forum made my 968 ownership much better than it could have been without.

Thanks Guys!!

OK, I know absolutely nothing about the issues mentioned above. I am involved a lot in flying and participate in a number of forums of that genre. The type of thing expressed above goes on in those as well.
I just don't get it. If you don't like something being said or done, ignore it. Such an easy thing to do on the Internet.
I feel VERY lucky to have found this site, and at this point am overwhelmed by the amount of information contained in it. I am one who has liked to work on cars all his life and am facing rebuilding my 968 engine. This site seems perfect for me.
I thank anyone and everyone involved in starting, maintaining and contributing to this forum.
BTW, I found out about the site on Facebook in the Porsche 968 Enthusiasts group post by Jay Kravitz.
I guess I'm going to have to find out what "Hershey" is.

Hershey is a place that makes Chocolate in Pennsylvania, and holds the "World's Largest Porsche Only Swap Meet" each year. Along with the swap meet it has become a tradition that the 968ers meet and have a "Celebration"...this is loosely a social gathering including, but not limited to, Wash and Shine, awards, Banquet, Drive in and parking together...968 revelry.

You can read more about this years celebration in Hershey in the Local Events section of this forum.

Glad you found your way here!
