One owner 968
#1

I am from London, England and perhaps unusually, as a new joiner to this forum, have had my 968 coupe since it was new in 1994.

I rebuilt the front brakes 7 years ago, but otherwise the car has not required significant work until recently when the clutch judder (only when hot) got so bad I decided to have the clutch changed - though I did not do this myself since I don't have access to a pit..

That prompted me to look round the forums. The replacement clutch is not satisfactory. The pressure plate is way to stiff, and I can see that it is a problem that others have experienced too with replacement clutches.

I am looking forward to reading the experience of others on this.

Common issue with wrong pressure plate going in. You need pressure plate 96411602790 for the stock pedal feel. That stiffer clutch will also lead to a cracked firewall if it doesn't have any added bracing, so something you should deal with.

I have the stiff clutch now since it was replaced I still think the mechanic put wrong part in the pedal just doesn't have the feel of my old one.

Tranquil, you are a very rare breed. I am a second owner (since 16,000 miles) and I think even 2nd owners are becoming more and more rare.

I think you must be one of the top posters 'advocate' - with 5000 + posts.

And I think I have one of the lower mileage 968s - it has done just over 30,000 miles from new. I regard it as fine wine rather than a well aged beauty - it has not aged much! However there is no clear explanation, apart from age, for the bad clutch judder. The old clutch plate and cover plate show little signs of wear. The new clutch with the very stiff pressure plate does not judder when hot. I can only think that somehow the sprung fingers on the old pressure plate have experienced uneven altered stiffness.

I am hoping that once I have another new clutch, that it won't be too stiff and won't judder when hot. Its intrigueing that even the official Porsche cover plate is now a unit that is appropraite for some 964s. Its clearly going to be stiffer than the original 968 pressure plate.

the plate with the green stripe is correct.

the plate with no stripe is for a 993

the plate with the red stripe is for a turbo 3.6

the plate with the blue stripe is for a C2/C4. this is the one that many suppliers provide. it is stiffer than stock, and causes a change in actuation geometry. this often leads to firewall failure.

judder is contamination. likely there was material on the flywheel. this should have been cleaned up prior to installation.

be sure that you have new and well greased fork bearings, and a shaft in good condition. either of those not being right will cause stiff pedal all by itself.
