OEM Amplifier or not?
#1

I `am thinking about renewing my stereo in my 968, at the moment there is an Pioneer (4x45watt)unit from 2002 in the car. While looking at the wires/ mounting points of the stereo I noticed that there was a round DIN plug sitting in the stereo compartment. My car came with the 490 option, so I thought this round DIN plug must be used to power the (2) amplifiers. A quick look under the seats....and yes there are 2 amplifiers. Since all the wires are still present, is it a good thing to get amplifiers working again or should I just take them out of the car? (The only thing I have to do is to modify the round DIN plug into the more modern rectangular DIN plug.....)

Rutger

the factory amps are low power amps, and not terribly clean - you are actually very likely better off with the pioneer, depending on your speakers

if you aren't running a lot of speakers, i would yank the amps - if you are running 10 speakers, i might think about it - the deck is not designed to run low ohm loads

Flash,

My car(convertible) has 3 speakers in each front door, and in the back there are two "two in one " speakers. The speakers in the back are not OEM, but they do fit in the original housing. The "bass" speakers in the front door are replaced by more modern Pioneer units.

Rutger

ps should I change the mid range speakers in the front doors as well?

hmmm - sounds like 8

the problem is the 3 speakers in the doors - that splits the ohm load down a lot, if there isn't a crossover making adjustments for that - that can lead to distortion and possibly overheating of the deck's internal amp

how does it sound?

as for whether or not to change speakers, that depends on what it sounds like to you, and what you want

sound is VERY subjective, and there is no right or wrong - it's all up to what you want out of it, and what you are willing to spend to get there

The factory amps actually are pretty clean just low powered, your Head Unit has more power.

That round plug is probably for the factory cd changer.

Hi Mark that plug is probably a din connector with 8 pins.

Look at this drawing.

Under each seat you have this din connector and at the back of the original radio you have 1 din plug.

The drawing is including the pin layout.

I guess since my 490 car is a '94 it's a little different or the previous owner hacked it up. I do have the DIN at the amp but I have a standard blaupunkt connector for hooking up to the factory CR1 at the head unit end. I do have a DIN for the factory CD changer at the Head unit.

Richie,

Thanx for the drawing of the DIN connector. I still have one question, how should I connect the channels 1,2,3 and 4? i.e. is channel 1 front right or front left? or should I check the colours of the wires coming from teh DIN plug?

Rutger I can not tell you, Because I think it depends of the radio you will use.

Better is to connect the channel and listen with side of the car is given a response. I had to make a new cable from the dinconnector to two tulp connectors. And tulp connectors are easy to change.

I just had a new Alpine head unit installed in my car with the 490 option. The old dual amps under the seat were emitting a nasty buzz that I originally thought was the speakers. Just used the amp in the Alpine and went past the old amps. Worked like a charm. Eventually I'll get at them and remove.

Last weekend after the Annapolis Fun Run Darryl offered to help with my non functioning door speakers. He removed the head unit and applied a sound tested and we discovered that the amplifier under the passenger seat was toast.

Darryl also decided it was better to work around the amp so we picked upa new Alpine unit at Best Buys.. A plus for me because I have recently purchased an iPod and wanted the direct connection anyway.

All wired up and ready to go, we couldn't get the back speakers to work. Apparently the low power goes through the amp and we couldn't make it work. Darryl is working on a bracket solution so we don't have to destroy the original speakers and it will definately be worth a drive back down to visit with Darryl and Christine and wire in some new speakers in the back that don't need seperate power. Meanwhile I have the other 6 speakers

Hears a pic of the rear speaker box.

Not as of yet...when Jay returned home to PA, we reinstalled his boxes so we could put his car back together. We havne't setup a return visit yet.

Didn't you say you had one hangin' out? I need to have one (or both) of these boxes for awhile to be able to test out a couple of ideas. Are yours available for guinea pig status? Of course, in return, you'd end up with new speakers in the rear. If you're around tomorrow (or any weekend for that matter), I'm usually tinkering at my office - near Dulles Toll Road and 28 in Sterling.

hey - before you commit you idea to finalized form, if mark can live without his rear speakers for a short while, i'd like to get an impression for a mold - i'm trying not to have to reinvent the wheel and make an all new enclosure

Yes, basically the same idea I had...let's make a mold and be able to just drop a 4x6 in there...the wires are already there that go up to the radio. I've verified continuity on at least one pair.

Sounds good guys. Yes I can definitely live without the rear driver's side since it is blown and irritating the crap out of me.

Daryl PM your number please, I somehow did not save it last time.
