Odometer gears, part deaux
#1

I replaced my odometer gears about ten years ago, and the odometer has stopped working again, so it looks like it's time for another set of gears.  I can't remember who I bought them from last time (I'd be shocked if he was still making them, anyway).  Does anybody know of a good source for these fragile plastic gears?  Thanks.

Reno is a quirky place, a lot cooler in recent years. There are a few 968s here, which only makes the place quirkier.

There are two different gears that need to be replaced in there, if you only replaced one of them the other one is probably the problem.

Yes, I saw that on Odometer Gear Ltd.'s web site.

I finally took it apart, and found the problem is with the larger of the two gears that typically fail – the small clear plastic gear which fails most often is in perfect condition.  The failing gear is what odometergears.com refers to as the odometer pod gear, the second one in the attached description:

Before ordering a new one, I need to count the number of teeth on my old one to ensure I order the correct one, and they apparently came with either 12, 16, or 17 teeth.  The problem is that my gear (the blue urethane part of it with the teeth, anyway) has disintegrated so completely that I have no way of counting how many teeth it had.  My 968 is a 1992.  Does anybody have any idea which tooth count is the most common one?  I’ll call odometergears.com tomorrow, but I was wondering if anybody here who has recently gone through this has any insight.  Thanks.

As I recall they are in pairs. So the one existing gear that you have should indicate how many teeth are in the gear that is damaged.

I just called odometergears.com, and they told me the tooth count is associated with the color of the gear.  Mine is blue, which means it has (or more accurately, had) 16 teeth.
