Nothing from the Instrument Cluster
#1

Just had the "air bag" light reset by a local mechanic. Everything worked fine until I got home--now nothing in the instrument cluster--no warning lights, no gauges, no speedo, no tach. Changed the fuse and still nothing. Any ideas?

It,s not to difficult to pull the cluster and check the connections. There are 3 ribbons that attached in the back. When clamped in nice and snug the arms draw up next to the clamp. You pull the arms down to disconnect.

Thanks. I'll look at that.

I swapped out the DME relay and the instrument cluster came back -- with the AirBag light. Took the car back to the mechanic today and he reset the AirBag light at no charge.

And the list of symptoms related to a failing DME continues to grow.

I am having the same problem. I pulled the cluster to have the odometer repaired. Put the cluster back in and tested it before putting the steering wheel back on, and it lit up perfectly. Put steering wheel on, turned the key, and now I don't have any gauges OR blinkers. Strangely, I do have the red light on the battery gauge, as well as the illumination lights when I turn on the headlights. Also, flashers work but blinkers do not. I pulled the cluster and checked all the connections, put it back in and nothing. Then drove down to the dealer and picked up a DME relay. Now I have a spare DME relay! Any thoughts?

How's your alternator output? Sometimes when they fail, the gauges go

sounds like a multi-pin is not seated

Well, the lights should come on by just turning on the key, so that should eliminate the alternator. I put in a brand new Bosch battery yesterday as well. As for the multi-pins, I've plugged and unplugged them several times. I know a guy who will let me try out his spare cluster next week, so maybe that will show me something...

Could it be the ignition switch? By driving a bit, I found out that it comes and goes. Twice I have started the car, and nothing. Then all the gauges lit up after a mile or so. I have not had them turn off while driving, it is only when I turn on the key. Sometimes the cluster is on, and sometimes it is off. Sometimes it comes on after a short time, other times it does not.

Or maybe it is the alternator. The voltmeter is pegged so I went to a shop today and their meter showed that it is putting out a bit less than it should. They suggested that I replace the alternator.

Had the same thing happen to a 928 this week. The alternator thing. Haven't seen it before, but who knows?

Thought I would let everybody know how this turned out. I bought 3 new multi-pins (the three that plug into the back of the cluster), and carefully pulled each wire out of the old ones, and snapped them into the new ones. Problem is a couple did not come out very easily, and a few did not go back in very easily. The good news I have driven the car about 400 miles, and cluster has not gone dark at all. The only issue I am having is the blinker lights are out, and they were working before this endeavor. The sound still works but we all know how quiet the blinkers are. If that's the only wire that I damaged, then that's not too bad. I might try to track that wire down one of these days. All gauges and lights appear to be functioning normally. The whole problem had to be that the lock arms were all broken off of my multi-pins. Would have been nice to find a tool that removed the wires more easily but the Porsche electrical tool kits are $500.
