how to fall in love with your car all over again
#1

while i don't recommend this for anybody, i just thought i would put things in perspective, so that others might think of their car in a slightly better light, in spite of any grief it might currently be giving them

for the past 3 or 4 years i have only gotten to drive my car 3 or 4 times each year, for a total of less than 1000 miles each year - that isn't much, and it always seems like i was still needing to be "tweaking" something every time i drove it - i would be modifying something, or changing something, right up until the day before an event - when the time for the event got there, certainly i had fun, but still wished i had a few more days to really nail it down

well, the last run, as many of you know, resulted in me having to do some fairly serious maintenance work - this again resulted in the car being down for almost 2 months while i got around to it - finally the other day i finished the work

i haven't driven much yet, as i don't drive much anyway, but now that i think i am done for a while with anything that would take the car down, i can hopefully spend the summer just driving it - the 2 short hops i have already made were enough to remind me why i started messing with the car to begin with

just buzzing up and down the local roads on errands has been a blast - the car is nimble, quick, and feels lighter than i remember - perhaps all i needed was enough absence to "forget" about the deficiencies, and remember the fun - we tend to take things for granted, and get used to things over time - spend a couple of months away from something you enjoy, and that perception might change

it did for me

I have had the feelings of diminishing love for mine.
I have only driven it 2 or 3 times since April.
I used to drive it 300 to 400 miles a week.

Been driving the 951 mostly and the GF's jeep (got I hate that thing).

I have been thinking of parting the 968 out and keeping some of the goodies
for the 951 (gear box, handles, mirrors, door panels, etc.)

When I get home from NYC perhaps I'll spend a day giving the old girl some
Love and go for a nice long drive.

I'm at cross roads with the car. Kinda of ready to move on.

Not hijack this thread, but...

Some of you may recall a series of posts wherein we discussed the names that we apply to our automobiles. My comment at the time was that the cars doesn't have a name other than "POS" when it misbehaves. This past week it blew the heater core and dumped all over the passenger footwell . Moreover there isn't a heater core to be found in the US, so we have one coming from Germany. In the mean time I bypassed the heater core.

Today my wife and I are taking a Father's Day cruise out through the Delta. passing through Iselton Ryde, Walnut Grove and Locke to Ione and eventually to Plymouth to visit a Vino Noceto a winery in Amador CO. that specializes in Sangiovese and Brunello. Italian varietal grapes not widely planted in CA. The roads out there run along the Delta levees until you get to Locke and then they are just farm roads. All fun to drive in a responsive, good handling car.

So, even though I am pissed at the car right now, we are going to have some fun today as we do every time we go out for a drive.

Like I said before, what better mix than wine tasting followed by driving a sports car ?

I just came back from another drive, this one a bit longer with quite a few winding roads, then open highway runs - whoo-hoo, this car hauls ass !
Maybe that new valve job really did some good after all. I also gave it an injection of 5 gal. 100 octane ( $ 6.50 /per.. ) which made the sound coming from the BB catback at WOT even more amazing that it is normally, enhancing the whole experience 10-fold. For a moment it felt as I was driving a "serious" sports car, not one which sells for merely the cost of a few parts in a real one..

Well, we had a great day out. Ran the levee roads through the Delta to the Valley and then straight across to Amador Co. Hung out at Vino Noceto, a small vinery that produces some very good Sangiovese, Brunello, Barbera and Chianti. And then the find of the day, a restaurant named Taste, located in Plymouth (no, not England). Plymouth is your quintessential one horse California Gold Country town. The restaurant was outstanding, what a treat. Came back to the Bay Area via mostly freeway. Some really nice sections of Ca Hwy 49 and Hwy 88 to haul ass on. Just need to mind the CHP.

Yeah, or you may loose your best driving status on this forum.

I have fallen in love w/ my 68 again. Absence is good but upgrades are better. I have the Avic D3 installed with the bypass feature active. I can program the NAV and even watch movies during trips if I choose to. The car is driving much better since the chip has been added, brake pads replaced and all the little kinks are corrected. I also gave the car a 3.5 hour detail as it was well needed. So I drove it in to work today. What a head turner.

Quoted for truth.

This can be applied to many things in life.

The 968 for me is the car/toy i've kept longest. All my previous project cars did not last more then 2 years. i'm going on 4 years with the 968. Everytime i have been on the verge of selling it, i went out for a spin and fell in love with the car all over again. Now, i don't think i will ever get rid of it. Maybe i'll complete it one day.

lol - just playing around a bit - nothing serious - typical weekend on pch - kids being kids - let's just say that the car is running quite snappy, and i had no issues zipping around - looking forward to really running it and getting some times recorded
