Pics of my car, and a question...
#1

Here's a few pics I snapped of my car.

Not to worry, the knicks in the lip of the wheels were there LONG before I bought the car. How anyone could be UN-CAUTIOUS enough to curb the rim on a Porsche baffles me, but I digress.

Also... what type of oil are you guys running? I've heard 20w-50, and it's 7 quarts, right? Just wanted to double check, as an oil change it nearing in the next 500 or so miles. Also, what brand do you use? Mobil? Penzoil? Etc.?

Yours,

Mike

ewwwwwwwwww!!! i would never ever ever use pennzoil in anything i wanted to keep running

most of us use mobil 1 synthetic - in warm climates, 20w-50 is the ticket - 7 qts is right - k&n makes the best spin-on (unless you use the very cool canton racing filter)

You are in Calif, right? 15W-50 or 20W-50 is a good choice year round. Synthetics are prefered. They give longer drain intervals. You should go at least 5k to 10 k miles on an oil change.

Any brand that meets the API SL or SM designation will be OK. There is very little difference in brand quality.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is what I run in all my Porsches. Good stuff.

Your car is beautiful! How long have you had her?

Hey, Bob doesn't look a day over 60.

Mobile 1 syn. 15-50, for me.

Flash unless you are sending your oil in for testing of acid leves and such 10,000 miles may be a bit extreme...5,000 no problemo. Yes, even with the 8 micron filter you are using. I'm ordering one today. (canton) Kinda depends on your driving style and blow-by miles on the motor as to how often you should change. Either way, you'll get better protection with a syn oil than dino.

Hey guys... thanks for the advice.

I always ran Mahl filters and Mobile 1 in my Jetta. Kept her running pristine.

The guy who sold me the car gave me like 5 Mahl oil filters he picked up at a Porsche place (so he says), and like 3 OEM air-filters. I'll probably just pick up a K&N filter, seeing as you guys recommend them. But Mahl are German made last I checked, so I don't see why that would be a problem. And I NEVER go over 5000 miles between oil changes.

I was assuming that most of you ran Mobil 1, but just wanted to double-check. If Redline was cheaper, I'd run that, but it's always been Mobil 1 for my cars. Although, my 2.0L Jetta was a 4-qt. car... buying 7 quarts is gonna' crack me up. Haha... it's like a freakin' diesel truck! LOL!

I actually just made the first payment on her on the 17th, so I've had her for about a month and 1/2. 96,000 miles. Already took her on a trip down I-5... never had her above 100mph. Just got new Toyo T1-S's on her too. Otherwise, bone stock (for now) while I finish up school.

What you can't see? The little surface scratches and what not, and the dent in the rear quarter panel on the passenger side. When she's clean, the dent is hard to notice... when she's dirty, it's pretty blatantly obvious. That was already there before I bought her. The only problems I've had with her so far is the dash light burned out, and I haven't had a chance to replace them, and the rear wiper is still non-functional... I'm sure it just needs a new motor.

Next question: How often do you change your tranny/differential fluid.

And out of sheer curiosity, how many of you have a 968 with LSD? I'm pretty sure my car, along with most of your's came with an open diff...

Thank for the compliments! w00 w00.

**And for those of you who were helping me look into a roof-mounted bike-rack, I talked to a guy at Yakima at the Sea Otter Classic downhill Competition at Thunder Hill Raceway, and he told me it's gonna' run me about $350... and I can only imagine that Porsche is gonna' charge me only that much more for a rack. But I just wanted to say thank you for all your help in finding those part numbers.**

As I recall, 968.net had many debates on oil change intervals - time permitting, you may want to search those threads; opinions ranged from e@ 2,500 miles to

as high as e@ 15,000 miles between changes with syn. oil. I think Porsche manual recommends every 12,000 mi, right ?

For this particular topic though, I'd place less weight (no pun) on what most others claim is "the answer", and tend to listen to whatever Dave G. has to say on the subject..

silverblt - no worries - thought maybe i missed something

dan - i use the paper towel test - at 3k i look at it, again at 5k, and then make the decision based on its condition - if it's yellow, i'm cool - if it's at all brown, including the edge of the blot, it gets changed - the change interval for me is averaging about 5k because i drive the car hard - somebody who runs it on the highway most of the time, will likely get much more life out of the oil than me, or even somebody who sits in traffic

I'm running Mobil 1 in my car. Since someone on 968.net posted that great special thay had at Pep boys with the calendar coupon (by 3 quarts of Mobil 1, get 3 free) I now have about 12 cases of Mobil 1 in my basement.

BTW, my 02 Mercedes ML320 has a recommended oil change interval of 10,000 miles. It takes 9 quarts of Mobil 1 though. It just went out of warranty so I'll be doing the next change.

Yea, duty cycle has a lot to do with oil longevity. Lots of city driving would put you at a 5K mile change interval. Lots of freeway miles and you could comfortably double that.

Beautiful car!

I too run Mobil-1

I-5? Where are you, the pics look green enough to be Oregon... I'm in Oregon, there aren't many 968s here... wait, did I see a palm tree in one of the pics? ah well... :-)

Still, beatiful car.

Sadly enough, I'm stuck here in Silicon Valley. Luckily my "commute", if you can even call it that, is really short to and from my office. $2.99 a gallon for premium sucks, but I only fill her up maybe once every week, or week and 1/2.

Ran Mobil-1 for a long time in both my 944 and the 968. I recently switched to AMS Oil. I'm happy with it so far, but I haven't put many miles on since the change. Little minor problems that turn into more major problems...
