New Top Installation
#1

Ok so I broke down and bought a new german canvas top from GAHH. Now how do I put it on? I get the feeling that most if not all you guys have had the tops put on by a upholstery shop. Anyone try to DIY this? If not then I could use a recommendation for a shop is or around Pasadena CA that I may be able to trust. If it's a little farther that's ok too. Anyone know of one?

Cheers

no idea about pasadena, but there is new life upholstery in los angeles - they are the shop that robbins recommended (the manufacturer of the original top) - look for andre - unfortunately you went with a GAHH copy of the original robbins top, and i know he is a robbins guy, so i'm not sure how he will react to that

after that, you could try louis at loyola interiors in el segundo

unfortunately you went with a GAHH copy

??? I thought that GAHH made one of the best tops, is that not the case?

it's a good top, but not the original, and you may run into problems with andre - maybe not though - it is the preferred top for louis though he will install anything - i have not done a side by side comparison of the 2 tops, so i can't comment as to how well they copied the pattern and stitching - plenty of people have used the GAHH successfully though

ring me up - i'm sure we can get you taken care of

I'm going to be getting a new top here shortly. So what is the supplier name for the original top ? I want to make sure I'm getting quoted for the right thing.

you can buy them direct too - most shops prefer to buy them for you (obviously so they can make a buck) - they dance around warranties if you provide your own top

Be prepared! "The Book" calls for 12+ hours labor to replace the top on a 968. Depending on the hourly rate, it can be a bunch. When I replaced my top two years ago here in Atlanta, I got quotes anywhere between $1850 and $2300 from 4 different shops, including the top. I bought an aftermarket top and found a guy to install it for only $600.00. He bitched and moaned when I picked the car up that he should have charged double!

yeah - not that bad around here - total job, including top, is only about $1200 - he has his own top, so i'm guessing anywhere from $500 to $750

With tax the top from GAHH goes for just under $900 so IF I can get it put on for $500 then its a $1400 job. I am guessing that its going to be around $1500 or so.

The new GAHH top is is on the car and it makes the car. It is so nice to be able to see clearly out of the back window.

It is not as tight as the original or as bulky. I am going to go back and see for the guys that put in an (Arthur's in Pasadena) and see if they can snug it up a little. BTW, Arthur's charged me $550 to put the top on.
