New Member Seeking a 968 Coupe
#1

Hello Everybody,

I just joined up to learn more about the 968 and to hopefully get some leads on a really clean coupe with a 6 speed manual. I'm a longtime PCA member. I've owned some interesting cars and motorcycles, and I am now looking to add a 968 Coupe to my family.

I'm located in Maryland, but I am willing to travel for the right car. No accidents. No automatics. Not looking for a cabrio. Lower mileage is preferred but the maintenance history is key for me.

I have owned a couple of older 914s and a 2006 911 Carrera S. I've also owned some E30 M3s, an E28 M5, a Lotus Exige, an Audi S4, a VW R32, and even a Honda S2000.

If you know of a clean coupe for sale (or possibly for sale), please send me an email.

I will check this forum regularly, but email is always the best way to reach me.

Hey, PM Darryl. Just drove a very nice 93 midnight blue cab two weekends ago at a Porsche 928 event. 69K miles.

The OP said he was looking for a coupe. There seem to be a lot fewer coupes for sale than cabs, which makes it a challenge to find one.

Yep. Looking for a coupe. Even though the rear seats are tiny, they're big enough for my little ones.

I posted a similar listing in the Classified section. Please forgive if it seems like a duplicate.

Andy,

I've got two coupes for sale right now; guess it would help to actaully list them though

The black one is a '95 6-Speed LSD w/ 118k Miles and is actually listed on eBay now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NO-RESERV...v4exp=true

Starting bid $8,500 No reserve ends tonight.

The white one is a '93 M030 Sport Suspension w/ 161k miles and has not been listed: Has Sport Seats, Hi-Fi Sound, Body Side Moldings. Has a new clutch with about 1,000 miles on it. Good shape needs a few small things: Rear Wiper not operational, odometer gear, tiny paint blemishes. Overall very impressed with condition given the mileage. Looking for $13,500

General question for the 968 community: I'm looking at a pair of 968s. Both are 1994s. Very similar mileage. Somewhat similar price. Both seem cosmetically excellent. I believe both are 3 owner cars. I have not seen either in person, but I have seen dozens of photos of each.

One car has a host of performance upgrades and has been owned by a PCA member who has put the car on the track a handful of times. Looks like service was pretty regular and frequent. I am not sure how hard the car was driven because it was tracked a little bit. I know these cars are built for that ... but gentle use generally helps anything last longer.

The other car has been owned by the same owner for close to a decade. It has done about 12k miles during that last 10 years, and was reportedly just a nice weather Sunday driver. The owner hasn't done any regular maintenance to speak of - not even belts - during his decade of ownership. He's not a PCA member, but likes his fancy cars. He clearly drove the car sparingly, took care of it cosmetically, but only repaired stuff as needed. No record of any regular maintenance at all.

Which car is the better choice? The upgraded / slighly modified car that was put on a track and serviced often? Or the garage queen that never had regular service visits (because the owner didn't feel it necessary since he drove it so little)?

I think there are arguments for both, but I am just wondering if there is a concensus opinion.

Also -- even though both are 1994 cars, one is a late 94 with the 993 front seats and the half rear seats. The other is an early 94 with the full leather rear buckets and the fronts from the 944. Which seats are generally prefered? I do have young children and will take them with me for rides in the car.

Lastly, any advice for buying a car that is not located in your hometown?

I'd be very wary of any car that had no preventative maintenance done over a ten year span. The timing and balance shaft belts, if they haven't been changed in 10 years are a disaster waiting to happen. The 968 has an interference engine which means if the timing belt fails, the valves and pistons will collide. It is an expensive repair, ask DS968 and he'll tell you all about it. The belts should be replaced every 30,000 miles or 3 years, as they time out. Infrequently run cars are more prone to oil leaks because engine seals dry out if the engine isn't run regularly. I believe the "rule of thumb" you will hear quoted here is that a car which has been improperly maintained may require $3000 to $5000 to get current. Tires also timeout. If the tires are 10 years old, replace them for your safety and that of your kids. Remember, these are high performance cars.

I wouldn't exclude a car that had some performance mods and had seen a few DE days as long as it has been well maintained.

One last thing never buy one of these cars, even one owned by a PCA member, without having PPI performed by a qualified Porsche mechanic who knows these cars inside and out. You should be able to find an example of a PPI form on this site somewhere.

Have fun and let us know how it all turns out.

It has been my experience that a Porsche with an "involved owner", even one who DEs the car from time to time, is a much better cared-for car than the one that has sat for years. It is one of those things that defies "common sense", but there it is. An owner who did no maintenance for a decade is not someone who has gone over the car and learned every inch of it, and what to listen and feel for constantly to catch issues before they become major repair bills. Not having done the belts is just unforgivable.

I did three DE's on my garage queen this year before I came to my senses and retired her. I didn't beat the car, drove her somewhat hard as I was a beginner. The car was tech checked prior to each event. Other than the chips I got on the car I don't believe it made a big difference in my car. I just bought another 968 and while it took some convincing, I convinced the other owner to drive the car to get the PPI. It was there that he realized to his dismay there was more wrong with his car than he reported or was aware of. Take Chris's advice, in fact insist on it. It also shows your a legitimate buyer. A properly serviced car is generally the option to follow. Someone that didn't learn the needs of the car might also have missed something necessary.

This is what the seller of the "Sunday Driver" car wrote to me about maintenance records.

"Hi, I just get home from work, the dash has no cracks interior in good condition, engine is in great shape, no noise runs very strong all belts were changed at 50000 miles paid $ 3500 for all the belts change. before me the car was owned by a guy who had a machine shop and did work for Cummins Engine company here in ******* I purchased the car from a Dealer here in ******* who was a friend of this guy.Since I owned the car I put about 11000 miles in it drove it on Sundays the car was in the garage so no Sun damage.I have three cars so this one wasn't used on a daily bases. 3 years ago the hydraulic line of the clutch went out it was a $1000 to fix it works perfectly since. couple months ago put a new power steering pump in for $500. It is a great car can be a daily driver. It has a small scratch but no dings. I am sending some additional photos. The reason for selling is that I purchased a Mercedes have a land rover and only a two car garage. """"

-------

It just doesn't sound like he's done anything for the car except the bare minimum when something absolutely had to be fixed. How much would I have to factor in if I considered buying it? Would it take $3000 to get it up to speed? $5000? IF I buy it, I would take it in right away and get everything freshened and updated.

well, the fact that he says he paid $1000 for the clutch line is ludicrous. he is either an idiot or lying. it should not have been much more than $200 for that job.

find out how long ago, in time, the belts were done. that is the determinant factor, not just mileage.

a PPI should show anything else

Belts were done before he bought the car 8+ years ago. The previous owner did them. So he says. I'm very skeptical of this car, but am only considering it because it might be acquired cheap. Of course, a cheap purchase price is meaningless if I'll have to dump $5000+ into it immediately.

therefore the belts need to be done again. 8 years is 5 years too long. it does not matter about how few miles on the belts. they are to be changed at 3 year intervals. as an example, i popped a belt with only 25k on it, but it was 5 years old and 2 years overdue.
