New Member - Going to Race my 968
#1

Hello,

I'm new to the 968 community, but not new to Porsche. Have owned a 997 C2S, which got me started in DE. After 2 years of that, I went to a 2011 GT3. 40 track days and 7 sets of Hoosiers later(!!), I am looking to go racing and have purchased a 1995 968 race car. The car has been stripped, roll cage added, fire supression added and has Charly arms and Motons.

Unfortunately, we found it will need some engine work, and the engine is now out of the car. We think we have found a good donar candidate, a 1993 engine from a street car with 49k miles. The plan is to take the engine down to the block and build it up as a race motor.

Both the car and I are based in Central New Jesey, so Watkins Glen, NJMP Lime Rock and Summit point are all in reach.

Best,

Ron

Welcome! You're a few steps ahead of me, but we're on similar paths. I've owned my 92 coupe for a little over five years, and have been bitten hard enough by the track but to turn the car into a "mostly track" car. You're probably doing the smart thing by buying abn already-prepared race car - this is a lot of work! But I'm learning a ton. Like yours, my engine is ouot of the car, stripped to the bare block, and I'm adding a lot of "racing" features, though I'm stopping short of what would probably be considered a full race motor, as I still need to drive the car on the street, at least to get me to and from the track. Anyway, best of luck!

Thanks...car certainly won't be driven on the street, as it has a full cage. What it lacks in HP it seems to make up for in lightness and cornering. I was able to hunt down a 997 turbo 3 weeks ago. Each time, he got to the front straight and floored it, but by the time we were through T1, I was on his bumper. After a few blue flags, he got the message and (reluctantly) pointed me byWink

Stories like that give me hope that I'm doing the right thing. Stories of these cars as "giant killers" on the track never cease to amaze me. I've had a taste of this myself, keeping ahead of cars like Caymens and Lotus Elise's through the turns, and that was on very soft springs, worn out rubber bushings, very much street tires, etc. Can't wait to see how it will do with the massive revamping I'm undertaking...

Newbie,

You have already seen the biggest issue for the 968, straight line speed and lack of power. EVentually the bug to fix that will bite. If you have the engine out - I would siggest going to whole hog and building a race motor that would give you over 300hp. The incremental price once the engine is apart is not too great, plus given it it a pre-94 engine - the rods should be changed anyway.

Good luck on the journey - but it is a slippery slope indeed (but lots of fun having a giant killing car).

Well, the engine is going to be a race motor, but 300 hp, according to my mechanic, is not going to be a reliable option. We will do a few things, but the real idea with this car is for me to continue to develope as a driver. The idea is to be able to driver every corner at the limit, every time.

I had straight line spee in the GT3, it is fun. But in order to advance as a driver, I need to be able to work the corners harder. The issue with the GT3 is that the limits are so high, if you go over the limit, things happen very fast, and that is not a good platform to learn from. The speeds in the 968 are such that I can make mistakes and catch the car.

Plus the dollar penalty for a mishap in the 968 will be much less than a street GT3.

Headed out now to pick up the donar motor!

Will Digiovani, at Precision Motorsports.

Will and I drove 4 hours up, 4 hours back to get a donor engine today. I will attempt to start a new topic and post engine pictures.

You have the right approach to building skills. I always say don't race what you can't total and a GT3 would hurt financially hard and much higher speed pain elsewhere too.

I've got my car at the shop now for the prep for next year. I always get that done end of season and then snicker at the guys wrenching at the first track event who aren't ready :-)
