New member from FL - thinking about black 968 coupe
#1

Hi everyone!

I've been in love with Porsche since I first rode in a 911SC at around the age of 4. For some reason, the 968 is extremely attractive to me and I'm beginning to do heavy research into potentially owning my first Porsche. Ideally, I think I would prefer a black/tan 6spd coupe, but I need to figure out how rare that combination would be (as well as maintenance, cost of ownership, etc).

I'm looking forward to participating in the future on the forum, hopefully as a proud new owner of a 968.

Welcome!

Learn to use search, and look for some of the threads dealing with 968 ownership. These are wonderful cars, not as easy to own as a Camry or even a Boxster, but nothing like some of the more problematic (read Italian) marques. Much of the maintenance these cars need can be accomplished by someone reasonably skilled in mechanical devices and willing to use the advice offered on this forum.

Enjoy your search and always get a PPI( pre purchase inspection). Worth the cost!

Thanks for the kind welcome everyone!

I'll be doing a metric ton of reading over the coming days, before I begin to ask questions. The beauty of the internet is archived posts, so I am sure most of what I need to know has been asked (and answered!) at some point previously.

I happen to live literally next door to a good classic Porsche repair shop, so after I'm done researching I'll pop by and ask some questions (and maybe see if a customer might be trying to sell a 968).

Some extra advice: you want to be cautious about what people tell you because a bunch of mechanics THINK they know how to maintain these cars. A 911 mech doesn't necessarily know the front engined Porsches...

Phillipe is right, experience with the 911 helps only minimally with these cars.

Also, try using Search Tempest and Ad Hunter. They search all the craigslists, and they find things that a Google search will miss. That's how I found mine in Los Angeles a couple of years ago.

Welcome to the forum. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know here. When I was searching for my coupe my thought on color was I wanted a Guards Red one. But ended up with a totally different color. What ultimately was important to me was not the color, but getting the absolute best 968 that I could find. I figured if I ever wanted to change the color, I could always have the car painted.

I'm pretty much a newbie here myself. Your post caught my eye because I own a six speed black coupe with tan. Was not necessarily my first choice but I bought, so obviously like the combo. I suspect it's relatively common. Purchased about a half year ago. Owned a 911 for several years prior.

These cars are certainly simpler than most porches. But they are now older and do require one to be in tune to repair and maintenance needs. And, there are not many shops around that have experience with vario cam or the clutch/transmission setup with these cars. They are approaching classic status and the cost to restore or even own as a driver are considerable.

You will find this forum a great help in finding the right 968 and then in maintaining to a high level.

That's a Big 10/4! And some of the supposed "vintage" Porsche mechanics don't either. Its a rare breed of car and so are the competent mechanics.
