I can't answer your question - someone else will - but I will welcome you the wonderful world of 968 cab ownership. If you have a chance, I'd like to see a photo that shows the fender area where the side marker light is mounted - I want to install them and an orientation photo would be helpful. I also see you have wood grain on the dash, and a photo of that would be interesting.

Sergio,

Welcome! I think you will find 968 owners are a good group of people and willing to help others with their car questions and problems.

To answer your question: You really don't want to remove the shielding which is there for a reason - HEAT. Without the shielding, heat can cause a variety of problems - that's why it's there. Look carefully to see if attachment bolts are loose or missing that need to be tightened up or replaced. Also check to see if the shielding(once you verify it is securely attached) is bent or needs to be bent to not rattle/vibrate against the exhaust manifold or other parts.

Last, but certainly not least, is there an underlying vibration that should not be present? Does your car idle smoothly without vibration of the car in general? How many miles on the car? When was the last time the timing and balance shaft belts were replaced/checked? If you are a new owner and you do not have good documentation that the belts were replaced/checked recently, then that should be one of the first things to have checked.

I had the same problem. My rattle was exacerbated by worn motor mounts, which replacements helped. Our cars will always vibrate more than smaller four-bangers, I6s or V8s and V6s. It's inherrent with the beast.

Unfortunately, after tightening the heat shield several times, the flange or whatever it's called where it bolted to the car broke. Bummer. After repeated attempts to order or to find a replacement, I've given up. No shield. No problems so far and it's been about two and one-half years and about 20k miles.

Welcome, and I agree with the others, check the mechanicals out thoroughly. I had an RPM specific rattle. Turned out the balance shaft belt was broken. Replace the belt, no more rattle.

Well thanx to all that reply, it seems to be a very freindly enviorement forum , plz excuse my english( if any erros of writing appear), the interior like wood, im trying to replace i find it too ugly, and a bit old timer... no flames plz!!! im only 25!!

about the rattle it seem to have gone away, i just removed half of the heat shield, the bottom half, although at 2000 rpm there is a small but noticeble rattle, the car as full service history from new, it as 160 000 km, it was serviced always in porsche shops, last service was done 2000 km ago, all belts changed except the smal one on the distributor housing( what does this belt do?)

Heres some pics of my baby!

PS:if anyone have a interior trim that replaces all that wood like, i want a all of it in black.

Thanks for the additional photos. I was wondering what you thought about the wood - it's not what I want, but I keep thinking about alternatives to the stock look (which, IMHO, isn't bad).

welcome welcome

i had the same rattle - it was the small shield that goes around the sender - a little tweaking and it was gone - sounds like you got there pretty much the same way

I have seen some dash inserts on E-bay. Just enter "Porsche 968 Parts" and see what is being offered but I recall seeing carbon fiber, metallic, etc. Welcome and good luck with the dash. Let us know what you decide to do and send some pictures.

According to the convertible top manual - and my personal experience - noisy operation is the first sign of malfunction - generally a loss of adequate synchronization between the left and right side operation. If not addressed, the frequent result is a fracture of the main bow. Repair can be expensive, avoidance is cheap. Put the top in "manual" operating mode - instructions are in the owner's manual.

Welcome...can you tell us about the oval cover under the license plate? Does this cover a tow hitch receiver? Pictures please.

I got to check the operating of the electric soft top, but my manual is all in german, i cant figure out any of it, can anyone point me to a scan of the manual?

How can i syncro the electric hood, how to check it?

About the plastic, thing on the back(oval cover under the license plate), i have no ideia whats it for? Ill keep you guys posted on it,.

Im having a hard time with simple things like tyre pressure? what should it be? 2.5 bar???, im running 225/40/18 in front and 265/35/18 at the back?

Oh! what does it mean, the light on the panel, the simbol is a Oil check stick?? like "?", it light up yesterday, but gone away almost imediatly, but i had no loss of oil pressure, the oil pressure seems very heatly indeed. 4 bar at cold and sits at 2 bar when hot, and it rises a bar as soon a press the accelarator pedal.

Tomorrow, when I'm on a high-speed connection, I'll email to you the top manual - it has the synchronization instructions, along with lots of other information. From your description of the oil pressure, that sounds right - assuming your cold 4 bar and warm 2 bar are at idle, and that it goes up to 4-5 bar when warm at speed. If the symbol you're describing is the red "!" (exclamation mark) that's in the middle of the instrument panel, that comes on with other lights when you start the car as part of an instrumentation check. If it ever stays on, it's telling you that some other light is on, indicating on out-of-normal condition.

Hey Anchorman,

I would really appreciate it if you would copy me also on the convertible top manual at vassos5@aol.com - thanks!

Vedder,

The two most common reasons for 968 engine vibration are (1)broken balance shaft belt and (2)bad motor mounts. When I did my turbo conversion, I replaced the motor mounts, but I forgot to tighten one of them, so I have vibration until I found the problem and tightened the motor mount bolt.

All this convertible top stuff is way too complicated. You guys should get coupes.

C'mon, Duckman - there's nothing like driving topless. For many of us (and certainly for me), coupe and sports car don't go together. (And, with the top on manual, no complications at all. And, no worry about leaking sunroofs, seals, wipers, etc. etc. etc. Now, if I could only fix my A-pillar leaks, I'll be a happy camper.)

Copies of the top manual will be emailed tomorrow.

Anchorman, I'm with you on this one! Sportscar and coupe are just not the same. By definition, a "sportscar" must be a convertible - at least in my dictionary. I don't care how many wings, tails, fins, spoilers, racing stripes, fancy wheels with big tires, high tech 'Euro-look' light systems and air scoops you have on a car - it may be a racecar, or a 'sporty' car, but it ain't no sportscar!

Disclaimer: Personal(highly biased ) opinion - others may vary.
