New guy on the forum
#1

Just bought a 1994 968 about 6 weeks ago. It needs a little TLC. First project is to spruce up the "top hats" on the rotors. They are all rusty and look horrible thru the wheels. Then I need to replace the piping around the rear bumper, sill covers, and the door handle seals. I live near Clinton, N.J., USA. Questions will undoubtedly follow. Thanks in advance for your help. rgraham

TLC will do a lot for your new car, and this place will give you great ideas how to do that. Welcome!

Thanks for your encouragement. I've already changed all the fluids ( oil & filter, transaxle, brake & clutch, steering, and coolant). The 968 didn't come with a lot of maintenance records, ( I know, cardinal sin buying a Porsche without comprehensive maint records ) but the mechanicals seemed strong, there was no rust on the Florida/Virginia car, the price was right, and it is so much fun to drive. It will be fun working on it. rgraham

Welcome!

I am also planning to replace the beading on the front and rear bumpers this week.

Good luck replacing your beading, hope all goes well. I would be interested to know how many clips/snaps hold the upper part of the front & rear bumpers on. Have fun, rgraham

Cool, welcome.

Some of my rotors have zinc plated hats and some don't, I have wondered about brush-on conversion paint to clean those up. Extend or POR-15 type stuff. I have used it on other parts with success.

Cheers,
-Joel.

Hi JFrahm. An article in our local Porsche Club publication recommended using RUST-OLEUM Cold Galvanizing Coumpound, zinc-rich coating on the top hats (grey color). First remove all the rust (200 grit sand paper) then wipe with mineral spirits (nothing water based as that would promote rust again) to clean the surface and let dry. Mask off the brake calipers and pads ( using aluminum foil is easy ) and the surface of the roter that touches the back of the wheel, the top of the top hat. Also mask off the wheel well area so you don't get any grey overspray in there. Then spray the top hats rotating the roter as you spray. A couple light coats should do it. A little paint on the roter where the brake pads touch the roter is not a problem as the next time you drive and apply the brakes the paint will be worn off and you will be left with a nice clean line seperating the braking surface from the top hat painted surface. Have fun. rgraham

Welcome to THE forum for 968 owners. I also own a '94 968 as you can see by my avatar. Good luck with your piping work. These cars are fairly easy to work on, especially with the engine in the front! Have fun.
