New (and old) Portland Videos
#1

Here is a hi-res in-car video from my last race at PIR. It is nothing too spectacular, but a few laps from the middle of the race where I go back and forth with a Camaro. Oil gets dropped in Turn 12, just before the straight. I get caught out by it first and then I think the Camaro does a couple laps later. It is a good demonstration of why corner exit speed before a long straight is so important. The race was run without the chicane so there is a long run down the front straight. I can get up an indicated ~140mph.

No chicane video

Here is a youtube video posted by a fellow racer. You'll recognize the car out the windshield. It's me and the same Camaro from a race (with chicane) in 2005.

Definitely a great example of how a few more mph at corner exit makes all the difference going into the next corner. I loved how you flew by in the brake zone. Thanks for sharing. BTW- Although it may not be as technical, I liked the speed on course with no chicane.

I like PIR better without the chicance too. Its a rhythm track and the chicane breaks that up. Although the long straight favors the higher horsepower cars, which the 968 isn't, I still like driving it better w/o the chicane.

Very Sharp. Had the entire office cheering you on to over take that Camaro.

Good job and thanx for the AM entertainment.

The stock clutch disc can be a weak spot on the track. I went thru 2 before switching to a Spec disc.

yup - especially when you go to a light flywheel

working on a solution for that now

Slight OT: the clutch that Pete sells, doesn't it have a non stock disk? Or is it only the pressure plate that's not stock?

the rs barn unit is a flywheel - it uses the stock clutch disk and pressure plate

But it doesn't have to use the stock disk and plate. A lot of these parts are interchangeable. For example, my setup is Fidanza FW, Spec disk, Sachs Sport pressure plate. It has held up for years of racing abuse.

fair enough - i'll have to look into their disks to see if there is something i can use that will hold up better - right now i'm trying to get a speing center disk made

by the way - how are you getting away with that flywheel? i was under the impression that's a no no in PCA racing, and that so far, only the uber rare porsche motorsport unit, the S2 conversion, and the rs barn flywheel had approval from PCA - different class? different sanctioning body?

I don't race PCA stock classes - so it is not a concern. There is not a whole lot of PCA club racing in the Northwest.

ah good deal - based on the turnout at the parade event, and from the guy who organized it, i thought it was pretty active

what group do you race with? - i'm trying to figure out where i am going to run the car i want to build

Seems to me like you had a very clear braking (as usual) and turn in advantage. Did the Camaro just have more power?

He also seemed to do a good job carrying speed into the long straight....well except for that awesome pass at the end! I think I've been watching too many of your videos, on that last straight I said to my friend "Look at this, I bet you he slips right by and out brakes him here" lol

The PCA is active just not so much the Club Racing part of it. I usually race with "Conference", www.icscc.com. It is a regional NW group that usually has the largest grids in the area. In Cali, I would look at NASA's GTS (German Touring Sportscar) classes http://www.gtschallenge.com/ http://www.nasaproracing.com/ or the POC racing http://www.porscheclub.com.

I'm not sure on the specs of the Camaro but he has a definite HP advantage and he gets a good launch out of the corners. If you watch the youtube vid, he is all over me on the straight bits. My car has a braking and cornering advantage. The cornering is mitigated some because of tires. He is on fresh Hoosiers and I'm on the Toyos from the 8 hour. The trick is being close enough to use the braking advantage to get by. He made a mistake which allowed me to get in his draft. I knew I had him when he couldn't pull a gap.

eric - thanks - i'll poke through there and figure it out

it's probably going to be a supercharged highly modified 968 cab - really not worried about how well it does against particular competition as much as seeing what i can do as a tuner

Nice work Eric. I agree that chicane just ruins that part of the track. What camera did you use there? Is it hard drive, dvd, or tape? I've just gone and bought a Panasonic digital tape as most of the advice I could get seemed to suggest that the others were more susceptible to vibration and bumps. I liked the 'rear viewing mirror' for our benefit, nice idea.
