New 968 Owner

Buying a 92 Coupe, Black/Tan. Has some good modifications and has been maintained. Sealed the deal today and picking it up Friday. I am looking forward to driving it home!!! Plent-o-pics when I am driving home.

Finally home with it. Boy is it stiffer than I first thought with the Escort cups. Overall as solid as I can ask. Perfect oil pressure, temperature, everything. Being a 92 with 160k, it has its fair share of problems, but everything appears to be cosmetic (mainly interior). I also got a bonus when I bought the car...I was expecting to have to do the belts ASAP because there were no records, but the owner found all the records and the belts were done about 16k ago, along with w-pump, and a few other things. I am the third owner, and the car was purchased from the Porsche dealer I had the PPI done.



There are a few things that weren't noted on the PPI that I noticed. The clutch pedal itself feels grabby, like the bushings are bad. The clutch is perfect, but the pedal is just annoying. Also from time to time, there is a slight clunk in the tranmission...really sounds like bad bushing. There are a few electrical grimlins that I am going to start sorting out. The interior dome light won't come on, and when you turn it on it blows the fuse. Its shorting somewhere. The sunroof works perfectly, but doesn't tilt as high as a 951 that was with me. Normal?



Otherwise, its by far the most planted car I have ever driven. It runs loops around my E30 M3, and to me feels way more planted than a comparably setup 964 RSA.



Any suggestions or ideas to the problems would be great!

On belts - here's the interval my shop swears by - every 30K new belts. After a belt change, retenstion at around 800-1000 miles. Then retension every 10K after that.



So belt change - 1k, retension, 9k retension, 20k replace at 30k, repeat.



Have the variocam assembly inspected - replace if necessary.



Watch coolant level - if you're adding coolant, SOMETHING is wrong, find it and fix it!

I might have a similar issue.



My clutch pedal doesn't always come up all the way - the pedal comes to the end of the resistance of the clutch, but sometimes sticks the last 1" of travel, popping up a few seconds later. Sound familiar?



I get a slight thinking going into 1st sometimes. My buddy has a 92 also with similar issue. It's very slight though. I'm replacing the tranny fluid soon so we'll see.



If the sticky clutch scenario sounds familiar, I have some helpful links I could post.

Check the Clutch Inspection Port. The rubber plug tends to fall out and the fork tends to dry up. Spray it down with silicone spray and replace the plug. (Silicone Spray and plug, about $8, new fork, about $800 + Labor...do the math)

Yeah, it came from just north of Atlanta. It was a hard sell as it didn't have an LSD, but after looking at it, it didn't resemble a 160k mile car. I bought it to be a driver, and thats what it is, but I am still excited everytime I drive it. My biggest problem is a change cars like my underwear, but I decided I was NOT going to sell this anytime in the future, so I have ordered new seats, a roll bar, exhaust, looking into a chip, ordered airbox mod parts, and might change from the Bilstein Escort Cups to some Leda's for kicks and giggles. I loved the Leda's I rode in, and it would be nice to have something like that again.

Beautiful 968 Wes, welcome to the group! If your sunroof doesn't open up about 3 inches in the rear, try pushing on the center retaining tab on the front of the sunroof from the inside while you are opening the sunroof. There is a microswitch there that gets out of adjustment. Pushing on the center tab engages the switch and allows full operation of the sunroof. Get it adjusted next time you have it in a shop. enjoy, Bob Blackwell.
