NASCAR - WTF??

As I watch the Indy 500 (on TV) I'm reading this thread for the first time. Wow!

Being honest NASCAR is a formula just as F1 is. You can't do whatever you want in either venue. Within the rules each maximizes the technology involved. I'd bet that as much time is pent in the wind tunnel and on the dyno in NASCAR as F1. It might even be more important in NASCAR because they ar more limited in their formula.

F1 is legitimately (IMO) criticized for the lack of passing. Many of their races are truly boring. NASCAR drivers make a LOT of money. Those at the top have unique driving skills that may not translate to F1 cars. The reverse is also too.

Personally I prefer F1, sure. I've been to F1 races at Watkins Glen (yeh I'm that old), long Beach and Indy. I've alo been to one NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedwy(I was given tickets). So I wouldn't spend my money on NASCAR but I would and do watch a Sprint Cup race on tv.

Gotta think a little more about commenting on the elitist thing.

Lear,

Well put. Yes, each racing class will by definition (budget permitting) maximize the technology within the bounds of the rules of their class.

It's unfortunate that NASCAR has such a negative stereotype, which "Talladega Nights" really helped perpetuate. The stereotype isn't my quarrel with the series - it's the fact the the series is based around cars that look about as well suited to a race track as a 968 tasked to clearing brush. That and the fact that they just drive around in circles at 90% of their venues. But I do understand and appreciate that it takes a unique talent to drive these cars fast, and no less skill to set the cars up to do so.

Not this season. New rules for F1, 6 different winners in 6 races and a lot of overtaking. (And even crashes for the NASCAR fans....oops!)

You're absolutely right; things have changed this season. That may make it more interesting.

And there have always been F1 crashes. However most were first lap, first corner and then the leader droned on alone until the checker.

So Danica was leading the NASCAR race in Montreal the other day and a fan threw a shoe on the track which she ran over and messed up something bad enough to pit and end up far behind.. My first thought was : wait, NASCAR fans do not own shoes, this must be sabotage ! Sorry guys, just kidding but simply could not resist , LOL

Ok, guilty admission : I was channel surfing this weekend and got caught up watching a few bits and pieces of the Daytona 500 ; I left the tv on that channel while working on some other things and from time to time actually paid full attention to what was going on at the track, including the last 15 laps. I'd lie if I said the end of the race was anything less than exciting ! What a finish !!

lol - i popped over to my neighbor's house for a minute.  they had it on.  i tried to watch it for a few minutes.  boring.  round and round.  even the driver shots were boring.  they almost looked like they were asleep.  one driver i was watching kept reaching down and squeezing something.  i presumed it was the espresso feed button.

my take on nascar:

follow the guy in front - go fast - turn left - repeat as necessary

i figure that's all nascar guys can get their head around.  having to make a decision between right and left is probably just too much for the budweiser bunch.  it's a kind of dumbed down racing those uneducated about racing can understand.  road racing is complicated and difficult for many to understand.  nascar is simple.

my question is, why make the races so long?  why not do multiple shorter races, have run-offs, and then finals?  you'd sure have a lot more action with a smaller field, and a whole lot more advertising opportunities.

Old thread , and it may be somewhere in the previous posts but :  one of the differences between NASCAR and Formula 1 :

Nascar :  the women have real boobs and fake designer purses .   F 1 : the exact opposite .

But since you asked …  the woman  who competed in the most Grands Prix is Leila Lombardi ( 1974-76 seasons ) , with 17 entries and 12 starts.

She did ( or still does ? ) Indy .   That’s good enough and she should be commended.    She would not be able to handle F1 , and I don’t mean that in the least in a sexist way,  Jeff Gordon publicly stated he would not be capable of driving in an F 1 race without a couple of years of intense training and practice .

Jeff Gordon, is he one of these turn left only drivers?

Maybe Danica is getting towards the end of her career, but I know F1 is brutal on the body, but I still think there should be more women in motorsport
