Yes, I was in that race. A 944 Cup car blew its motor, dumping oil in the brake zone at the end of the back straight. The car came to rest in the gravel trap at the end of the straight. Shortly thereafter John Engle's car spun in the oil and went off the track into the gravel pretty much at full speed. John's car made hard contact on the drivers' side with the right rear corner of the 944 Cup car. It took quite a long time to cut John out of his car. We heard that he had leg injuries, but was otherwise OK. I left the track Sunday believing everything was alright. Monday morning I heard the news that he passed away late Sunday night. I still can't believe it.

My sincere condolences. I find there are no words to describe losses like this.

A sad day for all racers. What type of car did he drive?

Yes, very sad indeed. John drove a BMW M3 in GTS2.

My condolences to his family and friends. A shock for everyone I'm sure. It is easy to forget how much energy a fast moving car is carrying.

That really sucks. After seeing a crash at a track myself I can attest to how seemingly non destructive they look, only to find out that the person barely made it (or not at all). We all go to the track to have a good time, it's a real shame that it has to end like this <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
