Flash's musing on traffic thoughts prompted me to post this game. I developed it while driving alone across the country just after college. I refined it living in Europe and now play almost constantly. My stepdaughter is a car nut and she started playing too. Eventually it became a competitive multi-player game.

What Car Do I Want To Drive?

Concept: Consider the cars around you in traffic and choose the one you would most like to drive. Then, over the course of your trip, 'trade up' as you see better choices.

A few loose rules:

You must actually clearly see the car
You can assume options - particularly engine type - that you might not be able to determine in traffic
Trade up as the opportunity presents

Sighting a MB XLR or 993 C4S 5 minutes into your drive creates problems. You may have to trade down to continue. So this is sort of a mindless way to spend time on the interstate. The two-player game is much more fun:

In the two player game:

You choose your current car in the same manner - and announce it to the other player(s)
You can also choose what car the other player(s) is driving - essentially downgrading them (dumptrucks, busses, landscaping trucks, and minivans are always favorites)
You must stay with a downgrade car for at least a couple of minutes
There is no way to win, but the playing is fun - and can get really cutthroat

It is all sort of mindless, but a lot better than license plate bingo for a car nut.

Somewhat dangerous to play with someone who knows cars.

Also makes finding old crappy cars as much fun as a new Ferrari - my stepdaughter loves to stick me in:
-motor homes
-old semis
-anything by Chrysler in the past 10 years (except the 300)
-plumbing/roto-rooter vans
-hybrids

You may have to decide if construction equipment in work zones is fair game.

Spotting an old rusty Pinto in the multi-player game is nirvana!

Timing is also a key aspect...

"Hey, I'm in a F430 Spyder!"
"No, you are in a A-1 Plumbing Services E350 Econoline"

I do something similar with my son. Imagining that a rich guy has just made the proposition that he will buy you any car that passes out of the next 20 cars.

Rules:
You must pick cars in the on coming traffic lane.
You have to decide as the car is in front or beside you. once it fully passes it's too late.
If you fail to choose car/truck/minivan number 20 is what you get.
Nonpicker gets to say go.

My son always takes the 1st vette that passes. One day theres gonna be a GT3 behind it.
