I drove both the base and S version this weekend, along with a 300hp Z4. No question this is my next car. It is the closest thing to a 968 that I have driven yet. And it's got 21 century technology. I love to shift a manual, but the PDK was so good that it may have changed my mind. Unquestionably the heart of this car and a masterpiece of auto tech.



Ergonomics were good, ride was sportscar tactile but not overly harsh. With the top up it was reasonably quiet. In comparison the Z4 felt like a boulevardier. I looked down and was going 115 in the Z4 when I expected to see 85. I looked down and saw 55 when I expected to see 70 in the Boxster - that's my kind of car. Makes slow feel fast - in a good way, not like my Toyota Tercel, where slow felt fast and fast felt terrifying.



Good thing I did not bring my checkbook and that it was not the right color or I may have driven it home. Of course when I got back in the 968 I remembered why I bought it in the first place - it fits me like a glove, and with Bob's SC, the 968 is no slouch in the go-fast department. They say the S does 0-60 in 4.8. I don't think even my supercharged beast will go that fast, but I love her just the same.

re: boxster - i do like the new one a lot better than previous ones, and i am considering it too, though i am considering the Z4 twin turbo more. no maintenance costs whatsoever really has its merits. i'll be driving both again in the not too distant future

I drove the new boxster at the wine run. The previous year we had a 2010. Huge difference in feel. The new one ain't no chicks car. Although while I like the pdk, have it on the Infiniti, I don't like its placement on the wheel. I was unable to get used to it Other than that its a great ride. Before I bought the red 968 I looked at used caymans. The reason I didn't get one was because the prices for similar cars where all over the map. Could never and still can't figure that out! There is no room at the inn for the Baby Jesus now so no car shopping for me!

Must be 11, lol. According to the Dynalicious phone app anyway, 4.7 0-60 and 12. 8 Q-mile in a six speed hardtop without the spare tire, the much lighter catback , and about 1/4 tank of gas...but, with steel bolt spacers on the wheels so the equivalent of approx. 50 lbs added weight. And with a mediocre driver, lol . ( A good driver might squeeze another 1 to 2/10 sec out of it ) Did the runs twice btw, the 0-60 was the same, but the q mile turned 12.9 . Now, the Tip with a stage 1 and with original exhaust ( but also no spare tire, and almost empty tank of has ) is much slower, I'm not even posting the results, lol . But, likely MUCH faster than stock :-) .

Enough of that, responding to the original post: Nice ! When the Boxster first came out I thought it was a ridiculous looking car but the redesigned, latest S model is impressive to say the least, very nice lines IMO. Definitely no longer a chick car. Also, I think the 2013 Z4 is similarly a superb transformation contrary to the first generation ones which I also disliked. And with that twin turbo engine in it, it can probably tow both of my 968s behind it and still easily beat the six speed :-) . Don't care how much fun the new Caymans are to drive, S or R , can't stand their lines would never drive one just for that reason.

The 2014 model doesn't seem to have a lot of reviews worth viewing on YouTube yet, but when available, certainly check out the reviews by Chris Harris, a British car-journo from Drive, or by the guys from EVO.tv, also very good.



My opinion: I would favor the Cayman over the Boxter though, and any of these two over the Beemer, which is good, but it's not quite a drivers car as the Porsches are. The material from Stuttgart just handles better (for starters).

I sure can grasp the appeal of driving a roofless car but when driving around in hot temps, like southern Spain or whatever, you find far fewer cabs than you'd expect. Solid roofs and AC are more important over there, it's just way too hot with the top off.



As far as I'm concerned, It's more pleasant to drive topless with the heating on than to cook like a lobster in a four wheeled pot.



Maybe SoCal has a warmth that is more tolerable?

Recently I started ogling the 996 since occasionally they are drifting down close in price to a high priced 968 (can't justify a new car at this time). I hate the 996 headlights, and they did have some mechanical problems, but those problems should now be sorted out on all of them.

lol - not a chance. while i think the cayman is a superior car in every way to the 911, and i think that is the way they should have gone a long time ago, i don't like the way i sit in the cayman, or the boxster, or the 911.....



the problem for me is that the tops of the doors are too high. i like to rest my arm on that, and unless i crank the seat up so high my head is hitting the roof, i can't do that. i haven't sat in the new boxster, but i hated the previous one.



can't argue with the amount of bang for the buck on the new car though

I'm a huge fan of both the Boxster and the Cayman, but when hypothetically (not realistically - see my other thread questioning the wisdom of owning any exotic/interesting street car) considering cars like these, I always come back to one question - why not get a Corvette, which car run neck-and-neck in a straight line and around a track with any number of cars costing two to four times as much?

Well, many of those points do apply to Corvettes of years past, but the last couple of generations, and particularity the current one, address every one of them. For a little over fifty grand, you get a car with GT3-level performance, a very nice interior, world-class build quality, incredible gas mileage, and it can be serviced at your local Chevy dealer to boot. I've never been a huge Vette fan, either, but putting emotion aside (very difficult to do with topics like this, I realize), the Corvette is hands down the best bang for the exotic car buck.

The latest version of the Corvette is a site to behold. Very nice look. I'm interested in taking one for a drive. Also saw a new 4 door Maserati. Don't recall the model but it was gorgeous to look at with an engine sound to match.
