My 968
#21

yeah - it's the header - the cat-back alone sounds great, but the header adds a good bit of a ricey tone - i've managed to work out some of it, and i'm about to take another step, but i have a feeling i won't get rid of all of it

Awww man! That's one thing I don't want with this car, a Honda-ish sound Ideally I would prefer something like the hollowed out sound Mustangs have than the farty-ness of Hondas.. That being said, I still need to actually HEAR an RSBarn exhaust, and I will be getting one at some point since it's the best solution available.

Anyways, getting back on topic: great car! Sounds like you might be able to go toe to toe with the Flash Mobile with all these mods

Let's not knock out a honda-ish sound. For those who have heard an NSX scream would tell you different. If I can even get the 968 to sound close to my NSX, I would be complete.

Its doesnt have the farty-ish Honda sound. Think of a Honda Prelude with an expensive cat-back...but only deeper. Its a smooth sound, but the closest thing to it is a Honda imo. In all honesty...i like the sound. The rasp/resonance at 3K RPM goes away once the exhaust gets hot as well.(which was really my only complaint with the sound).

Our cars will never sound like a Mustang....we arnt driving V8's. Maybe if you bend a couple valves...you will get a burble thats similiar to a V8 stangs.

I've heard the Tri-Flo exhaust which sounds deep, but loses its pitch at high end and you almost dont hear it. I cant compare it to the RS Barn unit because i also installed the Header. I dont think the sound would be drastically diff with a tri-flo cat-back & RS Barn header, compared to what i have now though. Like i said, it is what it is....high high compression big discplacement naturally aspirated 4-cyl.

If it is sound you are after, you can always remove the resonator and/or muffler, get a nice exhaust tip...and thats prolly the closest sound you'll get to a stang.

As for Flashs car....from what i understand...he has everything i have in terms of bolt-ons. I have my ported/polished high compression head with a 3-angle valve job. He has Petes Cams..which more likely then not add more power then my head does, however he is slightly heavier. I also have a lighter flywheel, so we should be pretty close at this point....unless he has more work i'm unaware of....which would not surprise me.

In terms of handling...he is the master there. His suspension set-up is without a doubt better then mine. My Coupe is slightly stiffer by default. But i still think i'd be hard pressed to out handle him....of course....if our cars are extremely close in terms of performance...it would come down to the driver.

Cheers.

Ok, so after looking at a bunch of youtube videos of various Preludes with cat back exhausts, I understand how the prelude's 2L makes the exhaust sound deeper than a civic's 1.6L. So then it's up to the design of the exhaust to eliminate the farty-ness and make it sound good.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tUbwH4Ofows&amp...ted&search= A compilation of 3rd and 5th gen preludes.

So it might not bad AS bad as I think it is... I guess the old adage rings true for exhaust sounds "No replacement for displacement"

But if anyone out there has any sort of sound clip, video clip, vinyl recording, ring tone, or whatever sound of an RSbarn exhaust + header PLEASE post it! I'm dieing to hear what it sounds like now!

Ron: to counter that point, NSX's have V6 engines, right? So that automatically makes them sound better

Here is a video of a pretty ricey sounding 968 at Zandvoort

Out of curiosity, how does higher compression affect exhaust sound?

Renn- There is nothing Honda-ish about the regular RSB cat back, the header changes the note when cold but once warmed up sounds fine.

I fully admit that my own perception is probably scewed for what a nice exhaust system should sound like for a 4 banger. I know our cars will never sound like NSXs, Mustangs, or Ferraris. But at the same time 90% of the performance exhaust systems I hear out on the road are on 4 bangers, and 90% of those are Asian imports it seems. It's not that the 968 in the Zandvoort video sounds bad by any means, but whenever I hear it right away my mind is thinking "Omg... RICER!". I'm sure it sounds better in real life, and put side by side next to a civic it will sound beefier and meaner and hopefully turn more heads! Having spent so much time and money on my rare German sports car, I think I'm a bit too self conscious about it

Mark and Fox944, I really appreciate your efforts to convince me about the sound, and I KNOW I won't be disappointed. But until I actually hear the sound my mind will continue to rebel

I thought somebody posted sound clips of two or three exhausts from a meet in Annapolis in May/June, might want to do a quick search

Wow, I didn't realize you've done so much with your car, Dino. That's awesome.

Your testimonials for the 968 on the Vortex are what got me seriously looking into picking one up.

Cheers.

Aahz, love your Avatar. I take it they are rally drivers as opposed to man and wife but it does remind me of that. This is a message from another Aventurine 95 Coupe.

fox - i don't have pete's cams in there yet - waiting for a reason to yank them - i did have him dial mine in

yes, there are some other things in there though - besides the header, my cat-back, custom stage 2 software, and the 12lb flywheel, there's an afpr, power pulleys, one-of-a-kind intake plenum, and much engine bay aerodynamic work

i am also probably very near your weight - i yanked 240lbs out of my car, so i am currently about 86lbs lighter than a standard hardtop, with a lower center of gravity

as for stiffness, i might actually be stiffer now than a standard hardtop - the bracing of the 3 units has made for some very interesting results - i can now easily put 3 wheels in the air by jacking at one point - i posted a pic on another thread - i know that the rear of the car is much stiffer than a hardtop - the only area left untouched is about 2/3 of the door jam, where porsche already did a lot of reniforcing over the hardtop, and i have more coming on that soon

all that being said, the cars are so close, that it would definitely come down to the driver, not that it really matters, because it's all just fun

Cosimo, in my experience, wives don't need notes to say what's on their minds.

By the way, my seats are not the sports. The only one I know who has the cloth sports is Pete at RSBarn. Hopefully that'll take the heat off a bit. I love having them - grippy, beautiful and no worries about cracking leather.
