Must hve upgrades for the 968
#1

Some of you’re 968s are far from stock form. I personally covet a couple of them on this page as they are so tastefully upgraded. I assume the owners are happier with performance and comfort of such upgrades.

My 68 is my weekend/sunny day reward for the work week. I’m not looking to track the car but at the same time, a stiffer more responsive car would only add to the width of my grin . So I’m seeking input on what you’ve experienced to be a must have upgrade (outside of the chip) for the 968 and why.

Please give it some thought and voice your favorite upgrade here. Should lend to a nice discussion and point many of us looking to add a little more “sport” in or sports cars in the right direction.

Thanx

David

Hmmmm....

As someone like yourself who is somewhat new to game and bought a completely stock car, this is what I have on my list (some of which has been accomplished) from what I've read here...

1. Airbox mod and K&N Filter

2. Stage 1 Chip from RS Barn

3. High-end sticky tires

4. Some sort of strut-brace

5. Possible +1 in wheel size

That seems to be a good starting point for the bone-stock 968.

Past that, I could POSSIBLY get into some other things (I like to tinker)

1. Exhaust-side system from RS Barn

2. M030 Suspension upgrade

3. Some interior work (930 steering wheel, different seats, etc)

Anyway, who knows from there... those are things that I think of off the top of my head.

I'm sure someone with one of the 'coveted' cars will be along to take my list and make it look like childs-play, but that's where I'm at for the somewhat simple, low-key mods.

Besides, I have to tinker with the Boxster too, and there's only so many hours in a year!

Totally agree with SDDave. If a full M030 suspension changeover is past your budget (it ain't cheap), a very popular upgrade is to only add the M030 sway bars front and rear. Also, a basic shock upgrade to Koni Sports is popular too.

Definitely consider a brake pad upgrade, as well as stainless steel brake lines. Love mine.

Cheers,

As noted above, the M030 sways are a no-brainer. About $500 and 30 minutes of work on your part. You can do it with the car on ramps too (jack stands scare me)!

A good alignment is the BEST dollar-for-dollar investment you can make in a 968 suspension. They are quite good handling cars right out of the box if everything is working as it should and aligned. There's a good chance most cars out there have not seen a skilled 944/968 alignment guy using a Hunter rack in awhile. That $300 can make a night/day difference.

Filling out the wheel wells a bit adds grip and a nice look to the car. Other than that, just make sure everything works as it should, maintenance up to date, wax it up nice and shiney.

The other things you could do start you down a slippery slope of $$$, so be careful.

My first $2000 (other than proper maintenance) would be a set of used Porsche wheels (pic a style) that allows for about 225 or so up front and 265 or so in the rear. Let's say that's $1000 used in good shape. Add the sways, have them installed, align the car... yup, you'd be right about $2000.

Just my 2 cents...

I agree with above and would add shifter block to make the throw better.

So simple, yet so true. This car is a gem when all is running as it should.

I got, my alignment done at NTB. Only noticed a slight difference. Either the car was correct or more then likely, it was done wrong. I will be going to IMA next month for the scheduled belts retensioning service so I will have them do an alignment.

Konis are on my list as my struts are a bit mushy but now I’m looking to add the MO30 sways as well.

All Great advice.

Yes, at this age struts and shocks are likely kinda due. The Koni's are nice and do not present the dramatically slippery slope that other options can pose. Getting a little adjustability in the suspension (Koni yellows plus a rear-adjustable swaybar) is a nice way to allow one to tighten it all up just a bit for pretty reasonable $$$.

One other handy thing (but more complicated) is augmenting the 10-speaker stereo system with some form of powered subwoofer. I did this in my 10-speaker '88 944 and in the 968 and it made a so-so sound system become VERY listenable. Depends what you need out of the car.

Now, as soon as my RS Barn exhaust goes in, I suspect I'll just leave the radio off

So far the only mod I have is a KLA strut brace, and the car corners much better. I haven't taken it out on any twisty roads in a while, but I swear there is a noticeable different, and its a cheap upgrade too!

Don't ask me...

The last time I went out for a walk, I got hit by a branch from the Stupid Tree...and my car has not been the same since.

Maybe stronger lights for better night vision?
