Motronic box removal problem
#1

Hi

New member here that is trying to change my chip on a Sunday, can't call any techs. Read the existing threads and viewed the various online pdfs for this procedure. But I can't undo the harness from the motronic box. When I lift the metal lever and start prying, the housing surrounding the wiring connection moves out but the wires and clear plastic connection strip stay in place. One side is pliable but the side where the wiring harness comes in stays put. Read something about a plastic clip that needs to be lifted but can't seem to find anything. Please help, don't want to damage it.

believe what you are saying, but when u release the metal tab, whole unit should 'swing' out...i think there is a hook on the end opposite the release tab. Should come out as one piece. It is snug.

what chip r u using?

CAREFUL when removing old chip...don;t bend prongs..u might have to put it back in someday...and there is a groove at one end of chip tells u direction of install

There is a screw that holds the black connector shell to the translucent connector body. If the screw is missing, the two parts of the connector will separate as you describe. The screw is on the centerline of the black part and next to the rectangular hole.

Thank you xrad and mikeo. Mikeo, you are right about that screw. I thought I had to take it out. Well, it was getting dark and I had it all ready to go and was kind of desperate because I won't have time during the work week so I undid the negative battery terminal, put on some doctor's gloves as an anti-static measure, bent back the tabs, and changed the chips with the harness connected. The car didn't turn over after the operation. Then I undid the negative again and popped in a spare DME relay and it still didn't start. I hope I didn't screw things up. But the rows of pins on the new chip were wider apart and I had to align them manually so maybe the guy sent a totally wrong chip?

I only tried turning it over a couple of times (something isn't right and I don't want to make it worse) and plan on reinstalling the factory chip when I have time, in the hopes that it will just work as it did with the factory chip. Bought it on ebay for $89, seller said it was an authentic Autothority for 261 203 070 but it didn't have numbers like that on the decal. I don't know. Just hope I didn't fry the Motronic box. Again, thanks so much for your helpful hints. Any thoughts on why it won't turn over? Did I do something fundamentally wrong or is it likely just a wrong chip??

Unbelievable! Thank you guys so much! I bit the bullet and went back out and stuck a mag lite in my mouth and fixed it up in about 10 minutes flat after spending hours on this project. Although I lined up the decals on the chips, I checked and saw that the divit indicated that the new chip was upside down (thanks xrad). And the harness came out instantly with the screw back in place (thanks again mikeo). The rain started pouring and it was pitch dark, but I managed to get it together and even went for a great little drive. The car runs awesome with the new chip, just what I needed to enhance the 3" stainless exhaust, and the K&N and IridiumIXs I installed last week.

Thanks for helping me out in a pinch, I couldn't have even thought about doing that job without this forum. I just bought the car three weeks ago and immediately decided it needed a little extra as it is Tiptronic and has a loud exhaust. It noticeably flies faster now across the rev range. I'll post pictures and formally introduce the car soon. It's a red 1992 Coupe with 89,000 kms, imported into Canada about two years ago from Japan. It's kinda unique as it has no bumperettes fr or rear, no side strips, different taillights and clear driving lights and side markers. Starting to really dig this car (have owned 924, 944, 944S and two turbos, as well as two 911s and two Boxsters). This is my first Tip, and I like it a lot, especially appreciate the variocam thrust! Cheers and thank you!

Man, I just noticed that I don't have to post any pics for you guys because my car looks exactly like the one pictured in this thread (Mikeo's), even has the mirror bras and 17" cup wheels... Crazy.

If there is not an autothority sticker with P/N on the chip, it is probably a knock off.

Spend the few extra bucks and pick up a RS Barn chip. The programing has come along way since the mid 90's.

Naw, I'm in Vancouver, but I had a Boxster that I bought from McKenna and threw the plate frames on this car, which I found on Vancouver Island.
