technical question - how does the cup of whatever behave when it's in the cupholder, and you close the door?

aesthetic note (i won't go into what i think of carbon fibre) - i think i would have continued the material behind the cupholder, and not cut it out like that. i also might have gone the other direction with the "grain", so the lines matched the profiles of the speaker grille. not sure.

I was wondering myself how you used the cupholder when the door was closed. Seems pretty tight to me. I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade.

For my vehicle, I think I can live without a cupholder. If I do anything it will be bottled with secure lid.

cupholders are a big deal in this car, and i wholeheartedly applaud anybody for trying to come up with a solution. i went back and forth trying to find a place to put them. in socal a bottle of water in the car is a given. having someplace to put it is a must. then there is the ever-present coffee.......

where i ended up with mine is not perfect logistically or aesthetically. it's the best i could come up with though.

there just isn't a great place to put one. i thought about a couple of locations on the door, but i didn't like the sloshing that occurred when i opened and closed it, and i didn't want to have to pick up whatever it was before i got in and out.

very difficult problem. i hope this works out.

In my truck, I totally use the crap out of all the cupholders as I end up leaving half empty cups in the truck and when I get in the next day I have to put the cup in the back to take the fresh cup with me - lol. I just don't see a viable option of adding one to the 968. I think the Germans got it right on this one, tooling down the autobahn at 130 you don't want to be fiddling with a drink - lol

I tend to take a minimal invasive tack on my vehicle's interior. When I put the CB in the Ridgeline for my 2000 - 4000 mile trips, I took the frame that was provided to hang the unit, mounted two clothing hooks to it and hung it on the front of the console form the cupholders. Comes out at will and leaves no marks. I just leave it attached to the unit. My GPS has a ball on a mount that was installed under the dash bezel and sticks up through the dash crack on the top, so no suction cup marks on my windshield and when not using the GPS it gives me a place to hang my hat. - lol

Good luck, I hope this works for you.

I dont like the carbon fibre look either...but I had the material and I was just starting to play with it and still playing with it. When the door is close, it's fine for someone my size as it sits just right in front of the edge of the seat.... Im leaning more with leather to match the seats and door panel.

leather would be nice, but i wonder about the durability of something you would be constantly putting your hands on (flipping it up and down) as well as liquids dripping onto it. even the sweating of a cold bottle of water would probably drip down onto and stain the leather.

like i said, this is no simple problem.

good luck. we are all hoping you come up with the ultimate perfect solution.

Since I only allow bottled water and NEVER EVER any food, there is no need for cupholders..can't believe Flash would allow any damage causing materials into his vehicle, I'm aghast!

lol - actually i treat the 968 like any other car. it's just a car. if i want to eat in it, i will. i always have a bottle of water in it, and often a cup of coffee, just like the other cars.

I'm still trying to find the cupholder that is secured under the floor mats - from an earlier post.

I got this one (or one like it) a while back: http://www.autobarn.net/wedautcup.html

It stashes behind the passenger seat when not in use, doesn't require any modifications to the car, and only takes up a bit of the passenger's space (rather than my precious space <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />. I do wish the cup holders were a bit deeper, but I have a lidded mug that fits nicely and I stick to using that.

Flash - from my review of the available options in countless threads, and as you point out in your initial post, it seems a 'like factory' solution is something of a holy grail.

For those considering their options I would say the plus side of the wedgie is that you don't have to drill any holes or otherwise modify the car and at 8$ it is a low cost functional solution. I readily admit it is a bit clunky though especially if you plan to use it often.

Carl968 - is this what you are thinking of? http://inventivaconcepts.com/air-1.html

Also came across an interesting article on the history of the cup holder: http://www.slate.com/articles/business_a...ingle.html

the ones i have also did not require any drilling or modifying. they use already existing hardware. they are still a bit "kmart" though, and i think ron is trying to come up with something more factory looking.

here are mine:

The Wedge is fantastic. Fits very firmly when needed, and comes right out when you want it to. I added foam to the inside of each "well", so tall mugs are held more firmly.

Actually, I don't eat my other cars either, but I will allow soft drinks in the Volvo's since they have cup holders.
