Mint Green 968
#1

HI Guys,

Wanted to get something off my chest and would appreciate opinions. By no way shape or form do i mean to degrade this car it was BEAUTIFUL!!!! And i think i had pasted up somthing good which is why i am asking for your thoughts.

Well here it goes.... The Mint green cab that is on this forum, well i had seen the car in Autotrader and i had took the car for the day from the seller who i might mention was a real class act and i mean that in the utmost respect!!! I had drove my red 968 up there to his home and i had took his car for the day for inspectionis at my local body guy. Most people would have never allowed that and thats why i say the seller was a real Gentlemen who i would to refer to him as an old school guy who works on a handshake which is the way i work and have the utmost respect for!!! Ok enough about that

Well after taking the car it drove Aewsome!!! I was sooooo excited to accept this car rahter than my Cobal Blue 968 that i have despretaly searching for many years i might add!!!! ( i have seen a couple of them for sale but they have been beat so i let them go, im looking to pay premium for a real nice car) Anyway it was aewsome till i got it at the body shop and realized a laundry list of things wrong with it, more so on the body.

Again i think the new owners name is Jeff and i mean this in NO disrespect in NO WAY and like i said i think i may have may a mistake in passing it up. Well up on the lift it went, and there we had seen sign of overspary all over everything wich led us to look closer at the car and realized this has been repaired in our opinion more than 80% of the car and the colors did not match. Therefore i felt the car needed a totla repaint and i had thought that would have killed the value of the car. Also when we turned the lights on the lights would not return to the down position, the A/C did not work. the hood was not alligned correctly and was hitting the wiper blade and was damaging the hood. there were many signs of bodo on the rear quarters and trunk lid and not done very well at all and like i said the color was off ashade or two.

So guys was i stupid in passing this car up??? I have to be honest and i got scared after seeing all thoose things wrong with it , the missalignment of the hood and the opinion of my body guy i offered him less than his asking price of 22k if i recall correctly and the seller decided to sell to Jeff, dont know for how much?? After seeing the car for the 1st time i was unsure of the color but by the end of the day i loved it!!!

Thoughts!!!!!

Hi Blue,

We all have our own reasons for the particular 968 that we decided to purchase. Jeff is the PCA 968 Register Co-chairman and is keeper of the Cab Registry. There is no doubt that he went into his purchase with eyes wide open. In his case, Jeff enjoys the rarity of the color and a very early model year. I hope that he will chime in with all of the reeasons he made his decision.

As to your own decision, you probably selected a car that required less maintenance in favor of an exotic color, so be it. I hope that you are enjoying your 968 experience. None of us can say if your decision was right or wrong, only you can decide that. If you absolutely must own the Mint Green cab, then make Jeff an outrageous offer that he can't refuse.

Regards,

Jay

agreed - we all buy cars for different reasons

personally, it depends on what i intend to do with the car

for a show car, obviously i would be looking for solid work under any paint, and preferably original paint, regardless of whether or not i planned to repaint it

for a street car, i really don't care about rework, as long as it was done well - i tend to ignore stuff like hood alignment, since i have to do nearly every one over anyway - mechanical stuff is subject to how much i want to deal with - the 14k mile cab i just bought needed a month of nearly every day to sort out, and it was in really good shape - it looks showroom now, but it wasn't in that kind of shape when i got it

for a race car, i don't care what shape anything is in, as long as the tub has no rust - the entire car would be stripped to a bare chassis and dipped anyway, so nothing matters

other things mitigate this too - if i found the right polar silver car, i would tend to overlook a lot of things i would not on a different color - same thing for a car i knew the history of

in the end, it is a very subjective thing - you love it or you don't - flaws and all

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the opinions, I hope Jeff dont mind i mentioned this. At the end of the day Jeff bought an Aewsome car!!! However i am looking for that Concourse winner type of car and im willing to pay for it so having said that perhapes i may have made the right decision.

Has anybody seen the 92 red 968 that Jarrod is selling??? Im on the East coast and he is ont the West coast. Its alittle to far to go and look at it. After his description of the car i feel that this is the type of car im looking for. Aagain its not a Cobalt Blue but im starting to think i may never find 1 after approx 4 yrs for looking for 1.

Thanks

Find another car with the interior interior you like and spray it Cobalt.

i really dont like respray cars, and to di it the correct way you really should strip the entire car . Including all interior and engine, that would be very costly.

I have seen a Cobalt Blue 968 Cab but it has a Tip, i was thinking of swaping my 6 spd in my 93 red cab with the Cobalt Blue one but not sure how much work that would be?? I think i may have to change the cluster and perhapes the wiring harness along with many other things. I may start a new topic and ask that question.

Thanks

If you are set on Cobalt that may be you only option other than the respray.

My intention was to by a cheap beat up car, gut, respray it British Racing Green, redo every bolt, hose and rebuild the engine but I was a week late making my decision on a local car that was perfect for it and it went to Canada instead.

One of the UK gus did that and looking at his pictures it is a BIIIG job so I am happy with my beat up paint car.

What fun to see my car a subject of a discussion topic that I didn't start!!! Well, first of all let me tell you that I was a satisfied owner of my first 968 cab for almost 11 years and I thought I would own it forever, that was until my son and I went up and saw the mint car. I had seen and looked at many a 968 and had known about Alex's car through the registry but when I saw the car in person I knew I had to have it. First of all, it has most of it's original paint. The front bumper has been resprayed as well as the rear bumper, the deck lid top, and part of the right front fender has been resprayed. The hood, windshield surround, full driver's side, and most of the passenger side including the body clading are factory applied paint. Your body guy gave you bad information if he told you that 80% of the car was repainted. Alex, the seller, provided me with the receipt from the Porsche dealer that did the work that it did have. Nothing major, just scratches. What sold me on the car were three things. 1) the color, it's wild and unusual (supposedly one of one in the US), 2) the options, the car is fully loaded including the very rare $4190 (1992 dollars) factory leather interior, the car MSRPed for almost $61K in 1992 and this is a 6spd car. 3) the history of the car. Keeping the cab registry helped me to realize that this car was the 9th 968 cab sold for the US market. Further documention told me that the car was a PCNA promo car!!! Those three things along with Alex's package of receipts (He spent $5K on maintenance over the summer alone including a new clutch) were enough to convince me that this car was for me. We negotiated for a week and I ended up getting the car for just over $18K. Alex told me there was another potential buyer in RI that wanted the car but he was glad to let me have it. After taking ownership and selling my previous 968 cab on eBay I took the car to the dealer for inspection and it passed without any major issues but did have a number of small issues that needed attention, many you mention below. I have been working on things all winter long. There is nothing major here, just TLC items, most of which I've been able to fix myself and have enjoyed doing so. Blue, if not for you I would probably not have purchased the car as Alex needed to come down to $18K for me to make the deal work so for that I thank you. I'm very excited at being the new owner of the car and look forward to it's introduction to the 968 community at the the Porsche swap and East coast 968 get together in just a couple of months. Things just work out the way they do in this world and it is funny how events unfold but the way they turned out in this case ended up with me being the happy owner of this incredible car.

i'm not knocking the car, or taking issue with the repaint - as i said above, it doesn't bug me one bit, as long as the job was done right

however, unless you used a paint meter to tell, don't be so sure that the paint was "original", just because the original owner didn't have receipts

my car, which both previous owners "swore" had no repaint work (other than the front bumper cover), had been 2/3 resprayed

here's the deal - porsche DOES NOT have to tell you that they did any rework, if it happens prior to delivery to the dealer - they admit that about 1 out of 100 cars (though i tend to think it is a lot more) gets work done before it hits the dealer - this work is NOT done at the factory - they do cover the rework on the warranty just like the original paint

this is pretty much standard practice with all car manufacturers

also, promo cars generally get a lot of respray work over the course of their display - stuff happens with all those people milling about he car

again, not a big deal - however, i would definitely get a meter on it before considering any repair of the paint - you never want to have 3 paint jobs stacked up on top of each other, two is really the max, and would need to tear at least one off before doing another

Bob, I think you know my history. I worked for 5 years in a bodyshop during college and have restored and painted numerous mopars. I've been working on cleaning the car for 4 months, parts have been off, I have thoroughly looked the car over and I'm confident that what I stated above is correct. Repaints always leave behind certain signs, orange peel difference, overspray, masking lines, ect. I have those signs where I knew there was previous work. The paint looks great. If you see the car you can see for yourself. Jeff

fair enough - something else to think about though - when i did my repaint, i pulled the body panels to hide exactly what you are talking about - i even had them mask the INSIDE of the fenders to keep overspray off of them

that's why i am ordering a paint meter - i use to have one, but it vanished - they have some pretty cool ones out now, and they are only a couple hundred bucks

again though, and i cannot stress this enough, i'm not picking on your car - except for the hardness difference, i have zero issues with repaints, and in fact often prefer them over original paint - i don't frankly think much of the original paint on these cars - pretty average job really - too much orange peel for my tastes

Hey Guys,

Im glad to see that Jeff didnt take any offense to my comments. However Jeff i respect the fact that you worked in the body shop for many years and after my body guy looked at the car with his eye he picked up on the color differnece and then pointed it out to me and i clearly seen it and also there were some heavy tape/paint lines around the rear quarters under the trunk lid loaded with wax wich was a dead giveaway. I beleive i offered Alex the same $ and he told me about you and your son and how excited you were about the car and had told him to offer it to you 1st. Like i said in my 1st post that Alex was a Aewsome guy and did call me with 1st option to buy because i had seen it 1st, you really dont find guys like that anymore!!!

Anyway it is a beautiful car and please let me know when the next meeting is and i would love to come and see the car again and meet all of you guys, you all seem like great guys!!! I currently have a 93' red cab 6sp in fair condition (i would say a low 7 or high 6 out of ten) it has been holding me over untill i find that 968 that really gets me excited!!!! I have waited this long and i beleive good things come to thoose who wait. So the waiting/ searching game continues.

Blue,

The car will be at Hershey at the end of April so you can come see it again then. I'll do other PCA shows in the spring as well. I'm thinking of the zone 1. I haven't done any paint work to the car and don't plan to in the near future. It cleaned up great. I know the masking lines you refer to but they've been cleaned off by me. They were there from the deck lid respray and not pulling the lid off and spraying it in place. I've clean those up now so the're gone. As for the paint not matching, it looks good to me. I'm not sure what you mean. Again, I plan no rework and others will have the opportunity to take a look. I'm very excited to be the owner of this car and for every 1 minor negative issue it has there are 10 pluses, that's why I purchased it. Being a 968 owner for owner for 11+ years now I couldn't be happier with the current car. It's incredible.

Jeff,

Congratulations on snagging the Mint Green Cab! Also, I think that you handled yourself with great class in this thread. I think that many posters would have taken offense (although none was intended) and responded in a defensive, even acerbic manner. You, on the other hand, conducted yourself as a gentleman.

It is only fitting that you, the man who maintains the 968 Cab Registry, should own one such a unique example. Perhaps I will get a chance to see it in person in Hershey this year. (I'm not too far away.) In regards to rare colors, believe it or not, I've always been partial to Rubystone Red; I once saw a 964 RS in the luscious, infecting color, and have lusted after it ever since!

Thanks for the comments. yes, the 80% repaint comment did sting a little but I'm the one with the car and I know what I'm looking at and I'm happy with it.

A Ruby cab would be something. Are you aware that this is a solid paint color???, not metallic (like raspberry). Here's a euro coupe for you. i wonder if they ever sold one in the US? There was a guy on 968.net who had a tip coupe. I have the photos of it at home.

I agree with Jonathan's comments. I think this should been conducted thru PM's.

You did handle this very well Jeff.

Yeah Jeff is great. I know all too well it's easy to offend and get offended. I probably would have reacted like a prick too.

Ruby is luscious. If I ever need to paint my car it will be something like that, not guards red.
