Milestone Passed
#1

So I passed a milestone yesterday on the way to work and I thought it worthy of capturing and reflecting. First the milestone(s).

To remember from whence she came:

One for fun:

And the milestone itself:

Now the reflection:

I got this car in April and it had 14K on it. And its not my DD. Several times I've thought - this thing is so clean that it should be under cover somewhere. But then I think - I'm sure Porsche has a couple in a museum somewhere, right? Why should worry about this, and who said I was put on the planet to become some sort of half-assed automotive curator?

And parts are harder to get every year, so when this thing needs a water pump what will my options really be? And I'm getting old myself - there are too many things that I can't do anymore without significant pain - when will driving a stick fast be on that list?

So I put a brace on, and another, and wonder about fatter tires, and a chip, and maybe a cat back, then I put on my best running shoes, some gloves, fill it up with 91, and head off into the morning mist.

Very fitting sentiments. I didn't buy my car to stare at it in the garage, I bought it for driving fun. Sure, in the winter I stare at it without its insurance, and I do tinker an pamper it on those bleak winter days to make it look/run perfect. But the spring comes and it's off to get more rock chips for me to fix next winter

RXTER,

My odometer has an extra zero after the 20!
Still love driving it every day; especially today with the top down, through the mountain east of Seattle, WA.
We won't get many more days like today until next spring.
Drive whenever you can...

357,000 kl on mine, or 210,000 miles roughly, doesn't burn oil, and runs like it was new.
I do the maintenance, and drive hard.
Drive them boys!!!!

Wow, these cars really do last. Are you on your original head gasket?

Rxter,

The photo at the bottom of your post looks like it is from down-under (or at least a right hand drive country). Am I seeing things?

Where are you based?

Hell yeah! Drive em! They really do last. I know of plenty of 944's with 200k+. One had 300k on it, and never had the engine internals touched since Neckarsulm. My 87 951 had 210k on it. Its on the stand, and still holds compression well, it hasnt been opened up since 87 either(cam tower was rebuilt at 200k, but HG, rings, etc are original). Ive never seen any reason why 968' should be any different. there are less of them so you hear about high mileage less, but theyve had a rep as being just as reliable. Good post, thanks for sharing.

I had 225K miles on my '84 944. The only reason I had any issues was from track, otherwise it would still be going strong! Regulare use and proper matinance are the best way to keep these cars in good working order.

Craig - stock photo off the net. Sorry about that - not aiming for false advertising. I just thought the picture would be worth a couple hundred words.

I from "up over" right here in sunny SoCal where we do get a nice morning fog from time to time...
